What You Will Do:

  • You will perform preventative maintenance and service on cars, trucks, and equipment.

  • You will perform repairs or other related mechanical work.  

  • You will maintain records of repairs & maintenance.

  • Responsible for performing skilled welding, fabrication, and mechanical repair work on a variety of equipment, vehicles, and structural components. This position utilizes advanced welding and cutting techniques and operates a wide range of mechanical tools and machinery to support maintenance and fabrication needs.

  • Operates welding and metal‑working equipment such as acetylene torches, electric arc welders, plasma cutters, and related tools to heat, shape, cut, and prepare metals for fabrication and repair.

  • Lays out, cuts, fits, and welds materials for machinery, equipment, bridge structures, and various repair projects.

  • Fabricates custom metal parts and components for rolling stock, machinery, equipment, and bridge structures.

  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance on equipment and machinery, ensuring safe and efficient operation.

  • Repairs automotive and related equipment, including brakes, lighting systems, and tires.

  • Uses machine shop tools including lathes, drill presses, grinders, metal saws, and similar equipment to complete repairs and fabricate or modify parts.

  • Sharpens tools and maintains welding equipment in proper working condition.

  • Maintains accurate job records, manages inventory, and orders welding- and repair‑related supplies and materials as needed.

  • The selection process for this position will include a structured interview.  Candidate responses to the interview questions will be scored and the selection will be made in accordance with the OCSEA/AFSCME Contract.

     

  • This position is overtime eligible based on FLSA Standards. If this position is filled internally, the wage rate will be determined in accordance with the contract.

  • All bargaining unit new hires must serve a one (1) year probationary period.

  • The final candidate selected for this position will be required to undergo a criminal background check. An individual assessment of an applicant's prior criminal convictions will be made before excluding an applicant from consideration.

  • All final applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to test for illegal drug use prior to appointments. An applicant with a positive test shall not be offered employment. This position is also subject to federal testing regulations pursuant to 49 CFR Part 40 (Federal Drug and Alcohol Regulations) and 49 CFR Part 382 (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) which prohibits the use of marijuana, including medical marijuana. Medical marijuana is prohibited as a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test for final applicants in this position.

  • In accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations 382.703, selected applicants for this position are required to register as a driver in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse at the following link\: https\://clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov/register

ODOT Mechanic
24 mos. exp. in automotive repair & maintenance of variety of vehicles &/or all types of equipment identified by agency; valid commercial driver's license required if motor equipment is of type & size regulated by sections 4506.01 & 4506.12 of Ohio revised code.

-Or 12 months as ODOT Mechanic Trainee, 52151; valid commercial driver's license required if motor equipment is of type & size regulated by sections 4506.01 & 4506.12 of Ohio revised code.

Valid Class A CDL without air brake restriction, with tanker endorsement must be obtained during probationary period & maintenance thereafter.

ODOT Master Mechanic
48 mos. exp. in repair & maintenance of variety of vehicles &/or agency-identified equipment; valid commercial driver's license required if motor equipment is of type & size regulated by sections 4506.01 & 4506.12 of Ohio revised code.

-Or 24 months exp. as ODOT Mechanic, 52152; valid commercial driver's license required if motor equipment is of type & size regulated by sections 4506.01 & 4506.12 of Ohio revised code.

Valid Class A CDL without air brake restriction, with tanker endorsement must be obtained during probationary period & maintenance thereafter.
