Purpose

The Building Resident Manager (BRM) contributes to the hospitality, safety, and security of the graduate student residences of the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University (JST-SCU) so as to maintain an environment conducive to student safety and success. The BRM apprises JST-SCU Housing Office and/or the Santa Clara University Housing Office of any maintenance or tenant related issues. Moreover, the BRM serves within an on-call capacity to respond to the emergency needs of residents during the school’s non-business hours. The Building Resident Manager team consists of three JST graduate students, serving on a rotational basis throughout the academic school year as well as during vacation and break periods to assist in the management of JST-SCU student housing. Effective communication between the BRM, the Director of Finance and Administration and the SCU Housing Office is critical for success within this role.

Hours

The Building Resident Manager is available as needed in the building where s/he resides. For after-hours, on-call duty for all three residences, the Building Resident Manager rotates with the other two members of the Building Resident Manager team. The BRM position is a 12-month role with time commitments varying from week-to-week and averages 10 hours per week. The BRM team coordinates with each other to ensure coverage during absences for vacations, holidays, spring break and summer break. The appointment ends 6/30/2022 with a possibility of being renewed based on budget and department needs.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • The BRM is responsible for the check-in and check-out process for residents and for properly completing Unit Condition Reports during check-in and check-out periods for the three JST-SCU residences in Berkeley.
  • The BRM will complete housewares and linens condition reports upon check-in and check-out for our Renewal Program students who are issued housewares and linens. The BRM assembles packages of optional housewares and linens according to the list checked off by the tenant upon move-in, and delivers these housewares packages or coordinates with the Facilities team for delivery to the tenants’ apartment.
  • The BRM is expected to thoroughly orient new residents to their building, indicating trash/recycling/compost bin locations and sorting instructions, laundry location, utilities closet, in-sink garbage disposal, the housewares exchange area located in the basement of the 2466 Virginia building, safety and security policies in residences, wireless access, and other matters pertaining to the buildings.
  • The BRM is responsible for carrying the resident manager cell phone while on duty after hours and will respond, when serving on-call, to the emergency needs of JST residents and properties during JST’s off business hours; on-call response will include providing entry to residents who have locked themselves out of their apartments, and calling the Facilities staff when necessary to address urgent maintenance issues.
  • The BRM is responsible for taking the trash, recycling, and compost bins to the curbside on scheduled pick up days and promptly returning bins to designated area after pickup.
  • The BRM is responsible for keeping public areas, including the laundry room; trash and obstacle free, and notify Facilities of areas that need to be cleaned.
  • The BRM is to maintain the bulletin boards in main residence hall.
  • The BRM is expected to inform either JST-SCU of maintenance requests, tenant concerns, neighbor complaints, and maintenance, safety and security concerns throughout the building and property.
  • The BRM is to monitor the wireless signal in the residence and inform the JST-SCU Housing Office of service interruptions.
  • The BRM must ensure that fire doors remain closed at all times.
  • The BRM is expected to notify Facilities of any malfunction of fire alarm equipment.
  • The BRM is to notify Facilities of any malfunction of building lights, including exterior lights and lights in common rooms.
  • The BRM is responsible for clearing deliveries from entryways.
  • While serving on-call after hours, the BRM is expected to respond within 20 minutes or less and/or return to campus in 20 minutes or less.
  • The BRM is to maintain a current cell phone and e-mail lists for all tenants.
  • The BRM is expected to communicate with tenants regarding JST-SCU Housing policies and general maintenance and safety issues in the building.
  • The BRM is responsible for addressing noise complaints or violations of housing policies; when policy violations are encountered, the BRM is to immediately inform JST-SCU Housing Director of the violations as well as communicate any tenant issues that cannot be resolved by the BRM.
  • The BRM is responsible for actively working to create and cultivate a welcoming community atmosphere within the building; plan at least two gatherings per semester in the residence to foster community among tenants.
  • The BRM is expected to attend monthly meetings with team of BRMs, the JST-SCU Director of Finance and Administration and the SCU Assistant Director of Buildings and Grounds.

Qualifications

  • Must be in your second year or greater in your studies at JST.
  • Must be willing to work as part of an on-call duty rotation team.
  • Must be flexible and willing to adapt work hours.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Intercultural competence: BRM must be able to communicate effectively with tenants from different countries or regions than the U.S. who may not be familiar with Berkeley and JST-SCU housing practices and policies (e.g. recycling, no-smoking policy) and American appliances and fixtures (e.g. laundry, garbage disposal, smoke alarms, thermostats and heating systems, stoves, locks and keys, etc.)
  • Previous experience in building management and/or residential life is preferred.
  • Community development experience is preferred.
  • To serve as a BRM you must be a current, registered student at the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University.
