What we’re looking for:
The Operations Coordinator is responsible for the safe, reliable, environmentally compliant, and efficient operation of assigned chemical manufacturing units. This role provides daily leadership and coordination of operations personnel while ensuring compliance with Process Safety Management (PSM), Responsible Care®, environmental regulations, quality requirements, and company policies. The Operations Coordinator drives operational excellence through strong safety leadership, process discipline, workforce development, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Safety, Health, Environmental & Process Safety Leadership
- Champion a culture of safety, environmental stewardship, and operational discipline throughout the assigned operating units and receiving/shipping areas.
- Demonstrate visible safety leadership and promote a Goal Zero mindset for personnel safety, process safety, environmental incidents, and operational upsets.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable Process Safety Management (PSM), Risk Management Plan (RMP), Responsible Care®, OSHA, EPA, and company requirements.
- Lead by example in the identification, reporting, and correction of unsafe conditions, behaviors, and process safety concerns.
- Conduct routine field audits, safety observations, and operational inspections to verify compliance with procedures, safe work practices, and housekeeping standards.
- Participate in and support incident investigations, root cause analyses, corrective action development, and follow-up activities.
- Participate in monthly safety meetings, safety walks, PSM audits, and environmental compliance activities.
- Ensure proper implementation of Management of Change (MOC), Permit to Work, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Confined Space Entry, Hot Work, and other critical safety processes.
- Promote emergency preparedness and ensure personnel understand emergency response procedures.
Operations & Production Management
- Coordinate daily operations activities to safely achieve production targets while maintaining product quality specifications and equipment operating limits.
- Monitor unit performance and proactively address operational issues impacting safety, reliability, quality, production, or environmental compliance.
- Optimize production performance through effective utilization of personnel, equipment, raw materials, and utilities.
- Coordinate product movements, inventory management, and logistics activities with internal stakeholders.
- Communicate operational priorities and constraints to maintenance, engineering, technical, laboratory, logistics, and other support functions.
- Lead shift-to-shift and department communications to ensure continuity of safe and efficient operations.
- Support plant startup, shutdown, turnaround, and emergency response activities as required.
Personnel Leadership & Development
- Provide direct supervision, coaching, and performance management for day operations personnel.
- Supervise Unit Trainer/Job Instructor Trainer (JIT) and ensure operators receive appropriate qualification, certification, and refresher training.
- Develop and maintain training plans to ensure workforce competency and compliance with regulatory and company requirements.
- Foster employee engagement, accountability, teamwork, and continuous learning.
- Support workforce planning, scheduling, and staffing requirements to maintain safe and effective operations.
- Administer daily operations activities in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement and applicable labor agreements.
Procedures, Compliance & Continuous Improvement
- Develop, review, and maintain operating procedures, work instructions, and operating standards for assigned units.
- Ensure operational activities comply with site policies, regulatory requirements, management systems, and quality standards.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, reliability, productivity, quality, and cost performance.
- Utilize operational data and key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify trends and implement improvements.
- Participate in PHA recommendations, pre-startup safety reviews (PSSR), operational readiness reviews, and reliability improvement initiatives.
- Ensure timely completion and follow-up of corrective actions resulting from audits, inspections, incident investigations, and safety observations.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Develop and issue weekly operating schedules and staffing plans.
- Maintain accurate operational records, logs, reports, and training documentation.
- Participate in production planning meetings and coordinate activities across departments.
- Prepare reports and communicate operational performance metrics to leadership.
General Responsibilities
- Support and actively participate in Environmental, Health, Safety, Quality, and Responsible Care® initiatives.
- Work collaboratively with employees, contractors, and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
- Assist in achieving company objectives through teamwork, accountability, and operational excellence.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
- Strong commitment to safety and process safety leadership.
- Knowledge of chemical manufacturing operations and highly hazardous chemical processes.
- Understanding of OSHA PSM, EPA RMP, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Effective leadership, coaching, and employee development skills.
- Strong communication, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Working knowledge of operating procedures, emergency response, and safe work practices.
- Proficiency with production reporting and operational systems.
- Ability to respond to operational emergencies and support off-hours activities as needed.
- Ability to work additional hours, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to support safe and reliable plant operations.
- Must have a level of proficiency with SAP, Internet, Email and Microsoft Office programs
- Must be able to understand unit processes in order to make knowledgeable, timely decisions relating to unit maintenance coordination.
- Must have excellent interpersonal, written, verbal and electronic communication skills.
- Must be action-oriented and have good problem-solving skills in order to make timely and effective decisions.
- Must be able to adequately plan and prioritize his/her work processes to effectively meet customer expectations and resolve conflicts within a timely manner.
- Must have strong leadership skills and be capable of directing others and informing plant management on status of his/her work area.
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Minimum of 5 years relevant operating/logistics/engineering experience in a process industry such as petrochemical or refinery required
- Prior experience as a Production Specialist, Operations Maintenance Coordinator, Shift Supervisor or Plant Engineer; or a minimum of 3 years’ experience in a full-time supervisory position required.
