Ophthalmic Technician I

An Ophthalmic Technician I is a specialized ophthalmic professional who assists eye cancer specialists in diagnosing and treating tumors of the eye, eyelid, and orbit. Manages daily activities at the Tulane University School of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology Ocular Oncology Clinic.  The Ophthalmic Technician I will provide individualized, direct patient care of assigned patients under the supervision of a physician. Assists in the implementation and evaluation of the delivery of Ophthalmological care services. Works with Ophthalmology faculty, patients, and staff. Acts as liaison between Tulane Ophthalmology and vendors/representatives. This includes, but is not limited to, filling prescriptions for glasses and contact lenses, takes accurate measurements and fits products on the patients, and performs finishing lab services and minor adjustments and repairs. Maintains strict inventory control procedures. 

•    Excellent oral and written communication skills are necessary.

•    Medical Software experience EPIC, etc.

•    Strong communication, organizational, and management skills.

•    Must be adaptive in accepting new and varied requests from patients and physicians.

•    Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently.

•    Ability to work independently and improvise in special request cases.

•    Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and high standards of performance.

•    Able to communicate effectively both in writing and orally to physicians, staff, patients, and family members.

•    Ability to perform ophthalmology examinations in a high patient volume department.

•    Must have strong decision-making skills.

•    Ability to obtain and transcribe all information accurately, neatly, and clearly.

•    Ability to operate a computer, knowledge of basic Microsoft software, and use a multi-line telephone.

REQUIRED BACKGROUND CHECK, PHYSICAL, AND DRUG SCREENING FOR INCUMBENTS WHO HAVE CONTACT OR EXPOSURE TO ANIMALS OR ANIMAL TISSUES:

Selected candidates must complete and pass a background check and an occupational health screening as a condition of employment.  For identified jobs, drug screening will also be required. The background investigation required occupational health screening, and any required drug screening will be conducted after a conditional employment offer has been extended.  

 REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 


•    High school diploma or equivalent.

•    Minimum of one year of retail experience in optical, low vision, and contact lens sales.

•    ABO Certification through NOCE within the first year of employment (with certification maintenance through CME courses)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  


•    ABO Certification through CLRE (with certification maintenance through CME courses)

•    Some college.

•    Basic Life Support Health Care Provider (CPR, BLS) -American Heart Association
