Job Description - Overnight Habitat Staff

RESPONSIBILITIES



  • WOLO (Wake Up, Lights Out): Responsible for putting children to bed and waking them up, ensuring all children are settled and awake at appropriate times, once per week.

  • Safety Floor Walks: Conduct hourly rounds of the sleeping areas to monitor for any unusual noise, crying, or out-of-norm behavior. Address any concerns, including children sneaking out or late night/ early morning departures, ensuring the safety and security of all children.

  • Sick Bay & Medical Emergencies: Handle medical emergencies as they arise and respond to children who may be feeling unwell.

  • Liaison Between Children and Parents: Calm down children who are upset, and act as a point of communication between kids and parents. This will be a daily task.

  • Conflict Resolution Between Children: Break up fights and manage any conflicts between kids, ensuring a safe and calm environment. This will happen daily.

  • Administrative and Clerical Work: Support camper services during downtime by preparing wristbands, grad packs, and building bags. Perform various administrative tasks to support the team.

  • Lead Evacuation Procedures: In the event of an emergency (weather or fire), lead evacuation procedures. Ensure all children are safely evacuated when necessary.

  • Cleaning and Laundry: Clean up after incidents (e.g., vomit) a couple of times a week. Stock linen carts, handle laundry, and manage any soiled clothing or sleeping bags, ensuring they are cleaned and returned.

  • Respond to Emergencies: React to any emergencies, including falls, weather-related issues, and other urgent situations. Be ready to respond quickly to maintain safety.

  • Room Checks & Child Care: Wake children in the morning, clean their clothing and bedding, and ensure their rooms are in order.

  • Restroom Emergencies: Address any emergencies in the restrooms, such as falls, seizures, or fights.

  • Check-Ins and Check-Outs: Manage early morning check-outs and late-night check-ins, ensuring all children’s belongings are accounted for and rooms are properly prepared.

  • Team Support: Work closely with Residential Staff (RS), as they have many responsibilities and should not be leaned on too heavily. Report directly to the supervisor only when needed and assist in managing tasks.

  • Coordinator Support: Assist with logistical tasks like opening gates, unlocking doors, and getting supplies. Back up the coordinator if they’re unavailable and help with documentation, logging incidents, and providing support where needed. Help train and support front-line staff.

QUALIFICATIONS


Required Education


Education:



  • High School Diploma or GED required.

  • Additional training or certifications may be beneficial but are not mandatory for the core duties of this position.

  • (Preferred) post-graduate education (e.g., Associate degree, Bachelor’s degree)


 


Required Experience



  • 1-3 years of experience working with children. This role involves actively supervising and caring for kids, not desk work or administrative tasks.


 



  • Foreign Language: Spanish proficiency for effective communication with children and families. (Preferred)


 



  • Specialized Experience: Experience with children on the autism spectrum or special needs is highly desirable. (Preferred)

Physical Requirements



  • This role requires a mix of walking (25%), standing (25%), and sitting (25%) during shifts.

  • Daily tasks include climbing stairs (no ladders) and frequently moving about the worksite, which may involve pulling and pushing carts or lifting items up to 40 lbs. occasionally, such as bags.

  • The position does not involve working in cramped or confined spaces.

  • While operating motor vehicles (for hospital and airport runs) is required occasionally, there is no operation of heavy machinery or power tools. Repetitive motions, such as using wrists, hands, and fingers, are performed occasionally.

  • The role also requires the ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods, either standing or sitting. Communication with others is constant, and occasional assessment of work accuracy and thoroughness is required.

  • The schedule for this position is 7 days per week, from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. The schedule is fixed and not flexible.
