About Us

The North Carolina Department of Justice, led by the Attorney General of North Carolina, represents the state, state agencies, and elected officials, and defends the rights of the people of North Carolina. The Department handles all state criminal appeals cases and assists district attorneys with complex criminal cases at their request. Additionally, the Department of Justice includes the North Carolina State Crime Lab, the North Carolina Justice Academy, and the Sheriffs’ and Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Divisions.

Description of Work

Recruitment range: $55,460 - $56,283

Some key job duties / aspects:

• Draft clear and accurate legal documents, including pleadings, correspondence, memoranda, affidavits, factual summaries, and appellate materials.
• Prepare and respond to discovery requests; organize large document productions; review materials for privilege; maintain electronic discovery databases.
• File pleadings and other legal documents in state and federal courts and administrative forums; manage organized filing and document-management systems.
• Conduct legal and factual research using LexisNexis, Westlaw, and other databases; prepare concise research summaries and assist attorneys in gathering relevant information.
• Assist attorneys with trial and hearing preparation, including exhibit organization, witness coordination, and creation of trial notebooks and indices.
• Support appellate work by reviewing and assembling records on appeal, cite-checking, proofreading, and assisting with brief preparation and filing.
• Communicate effectively with client agencies, court personnel, and other parties to support case progress and ensure timely responses.
• Demonstrate strong writing, research, organizational, and analytical skills; ability to work independently with minimal supervision on complex legal matters.
• Proficiency with word processing, online legal research tools, electronic filing systems, and document-management systems.
• Knowledge of discovery procedures, court rules, administrative processes, and litigation support practices; ability to analyze and solve technical problems and maintain detailed legal files.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Management Preferences:

  • Experience providing legal and administrative support to multiple attorneys simultaneously in a fast-paced civil litigation environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing deadlines, prioritize tasks, and coordinate workflow across several active civil matters.
  • Proven effectiveness in communicating with courts, client agencies, and opposing counsel to support attorneys across diverse civil practice areas.
  • Experience maintaining efficient document-management systems, electronic filing processes, and case tracking tools for teams of attorneys.

Minimum Education and Experience

Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. Graduation from an appropriately accredited institution for paralegal training and two years of experience as a paralegal; or Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of substantive paralegal experience; or High school or General Education Development (GED) diploma and six years of paralegal experience performing delegated, substantive legal work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
