The mission of Denver Park Rangers is to maximize public safety, protect park resources and provide service to visitors. Park Rangers patrol mountain and urban parks daily by foot, bicycle and vehicle, assisting local law enforcement and fire department in the event of an emergency or hazardous situation.

What We Offer

The City and County of Denver offers a competitive salary commensurate with education and experience. The salary range for this position is $65,523 - $108,113/Year. We also offer generous benefits for full-time employees which include but is not limited to:

  • 140 hours of PTO earned within first year + 11 paid holidays, 1 personal holiday and 1 volunteer day per year

  • If the incumbent meets requirements per CSA rules, Park Rangers may be able to earn a shift differential in pay for working during night hours or evening hours at 12% of current hourly pay rate and 7% of current hourly pay rate, respectively.

Location

The Ranger department is hiring a Park Ranger Supervisor for the East District. In this position you would be required to work weekends, nights, and holidays, and the hours in this position may vary. A flexible 4 (10) shift work week is available as well as a 5 (8) shift work week.

What You’ll Do

This position will be responsible for directly supervising a team (part-time and full-time positions), ensuring their success and safety, and focusing on continuous improvement for the program. This is a full-time, benefitted opportunity to work within one of the largest and most diverse park systems in the region consisting of both urban and mountain parks.

Job duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide work instruction, assist employees with difficult and/or unusual assignments, and encourage innovation

  • Train employees in the day-to-day procedures of the work unit and proficiency in individual knowledge, skills, and abilities essential to work tasks

  • Conduct hiring interviews and select candidates for job openings

  • Review, develop, and/or modify work plans, methods, and procedures, determine work priorities, and develop work schedules to provide adequate staff coverage

  • Plan, assign, and evaluate the work of staff members, provide technical expertise to staff, and establish unit and staff work goals and objectives

  • Develop and manage programmatic needs within area of responsibility or as assigned; develop and coordinate the implementation of strategies for rule compliance and education in areas assigned

  • Manage assigned budget and purchase needed services and goods per city rules; develop standard operating procedures and make recommendations for improvements as needed

  • Investigate and work with various internal/external customers to resolve complaints, escalated issues, and related problems; make formal recommendations and coordinate with other departments as needed

  • Resolve problems, mediate conflicts encountered during daily operations, determine appropriate solutions, and promote teamwork. Encourage regular communication and inform staff of relevant business issues and their impact on the organization

  • Develop goals, document performance, provide performance feedback and formally evaluate the work of employees; provide reward and recognition for proper and efficient performance. Assist staff to achieve performance standards and identify opportunities for continual improvement to performance standards

  • Ensure quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of unit activities and safety measures

  • Ensure compliance with legal settlements and protocols

  • Document causes for disciplinary action, initiate letters of reprimand, and make formal recommendations for disciplinary action. Respond to formal and informal employee grievances and prepare written responses

What You’ll Bring

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

  • Professional experience in various Park Ranger related duties; experience with lead work or supervision, and park regulation compliance preferred

  • Possession of current: CPR/First Aid Certification, Wilderness First Aid Certification, Wilderness First Responder Certification, Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG), or Certificate of Park Ranger Technology from an Accredited College

  • Bilingual skills (Spanish is preferred)

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and/or GPS units (to track/document field work)

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Recreation, Forestry, Environmental Science, Environmental Education, Wildlife Management, Natural Resources Management, Park Management, or a related field

  • Experience: Two years or four seasons of park experience in public relations, natural science, open space, or regulations compliance

  • License/Certifications: Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application. Possession of a valid Denver Parks and Recreation Enforcement Official Certification by the end of the Ranger Training Program. Possession of CPR and first aid certification by the completion of probation and must maintain throughout employment. Training in Vistelar or other designated training, verbal defense certification is a condition of employment, and must be obtained by the completion of probation. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment

  • Equivalency: A combination of appropriate education and experience may be substituted for the minimum education and experience requirements
