Pathologists Assistant - Per Diem

The Pathologist Assistant performs the gross description and dissection of tissue specimens under the pathologist's supervision. They also accession the specimen and perform other related computer tasks. They assist the pathologist in performing autopsies and they maintain the morgue and supplies required there. They are also responsible for cutting frozen specimens.

A day in the life of a Pathologists Assistant at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

• Accurately describes and dissects all surgical pathology specimens under the direct supervision of a pathologist. Prepares tissue for processing for light microscopy, obtains samples for flow cytometry, handles specimens for special studies including send outs for cytogenetics analysis, electron microscopy and immunofluorescence.
• Receives surgical pathology specimens from the OR, endoscopy, L&D, Mediplex, and other outpatients facilities ensuring proper patient-specimen identification and labeling. Accessions all cases into the pathology computer system and accurately labeling corresponding specimens and tissue blocks.
• Maintains all supplies in the surgical cutting area and autopsy room. Ensures proper disinfection of all work areas and instruments on a regular basis, disinfects cryostat on a regular basis, and records cryostat temperature and functionality daily.
• Assists in the external examination, evisceration, and dissection of organs at the time of post mortem examination. Documents organ weights/measurements as well as all additional findings.
• Assists the pathologist with intraoperative frozen sections and consults including specimen grossing, frozen section cutting, and slide staining.
• Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
• Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

• Bachelors degree from a Pathologist Assistant program.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

• Masters degree.
• Prior experience.
