Patient Care Tech (PCT)

Overall Objective:

The Patient Care Technician in the ASC is primarily responsible for supporting safe, efficient patient care before, during, and after surgical procedures. They will focus on patient preparation, clinical support, and maintaining a safe care environment. 

Principal Activities and Expected End Results: 

• Assist nurses and anesthesia with safely positioning of patients.
• Assist with cleaning and ensuring the sterility of Operating Rooms, Pre-op bays, and PACU bays in accordance with Pre-Procedure Clean-up, Post Procedure Clean-up, and Terminal Cleaning policy of Virginia Urology Surgery Center.
• Oversee appropriate inventory is stocked and readily available in Operating Rooms, patient care areas and supply rooms.
• Put away equipment after case. (Lasers, microscopes, stirrups, etc.)
• Assist with turning over rooms to ensure timely turnover, such duties include wiping all the equipment and surfaces down in each OR room, bringing in equipment for the following case, removing waste, soiled linen, biohazard waste, and completing terminal cleaning of the Operating Rooms in accordance with the Cleaning Policy of VUSC.
• Assist anesthesia in turning over the anesthesia machine for following case, such as wiping down anesthesia machine, anesthesia cart, computer, keyboard, and connecting new circuit for following case.
• Transports specimens to the Pathology Department and to the 2nd floor lab in accordance with acceptable infections control guidelines and departmental policies and procedures.
• Assist with transferring patients from stretcher to bed, bed to stretcher, and into/out of wheelchair.
• Transports instruments to Central Sterile department for cleaning.
• Shares responsibility for patient safety at all times. Maintains an environment that is free of obstacles and hazards that could result in injuries to personnel and patients.
• Restock warmer in the OR with clean blankets, gowns, saline, and water.
• Report broken equipment to supervisor.
• Replace sharps containers when ¾ full.
• Attends continuing education including but not limited to; Safety, Infection Control, Disaster preparedness, code reviews, fire safety, IVCS and MH, radiation safety and document attendance on continuing education worksheet. These continuing education sessions can be in the form of in-services, online training and testing, handouts, etc.
• Attends monthly staff meetings.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Experience: 

High school diploma or GED required.

Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (or equivalent) required.

One (1) year of direct patient care experience in a hospital, ambulatory surgery center, physician practice, or similar setting.

Basic computer skills with the ability to accurately document in an electronic medical record.

Demonstrate ability to maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Experience: 

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Patient Care Technician (PCT), or Medical Assistant  (MA) certification.

Previous experience with patient transport, obtaining vital signs, and assisting with daily patient care activities.

Prior work experience: 

Previous experience in perioperative services, pre-op, PACU, or an ambulatory surgery center. 

Physical Requirements: 

The individual performing this job may reasonably anticipate coming into contact with human blood and other potentially infectious material. Individuals in this position are required to exercise universal precautions, use personal protective   equipment and devices when applicable, and learn to abide by the policies related to safety and infection control.

Must be able to lift, push, pull or transfer up to 50 pounds and assist with heavier patient transfers using appropriate equipment or team assistance. Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, twist, and climb as necessary to provide patient care. Use hands and fingers for fine motor tasks, including handling of medical equipment and documenting patient information. Posses’ visual   acuity, hearing and verbal communication abilities sufficient to observe   patient conditions. Frequently push and pull wheelchairs, stretchers, carts, and other patient care equipment.

Other Information:

This is a full-time   position working 8:00a -4:30p Monday – Friday. Persons in this role will exhibit strong initiative, personal   accountability, and ability to independently identify and   execute improvement opportunities.

Compensation Range: 

$14.71/hour - $19.69/hour, based on experience
