General Summary:

The PCR Lab Technician will assist in performing various screening procedures. This position requires patience, empathy, time management, and professionalism with patients, co-workers, and providers.

 

Minimum Qualifications:


  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Associate’s in Applied Science Degree in Clinical Laboratory Technology preferred

  • 6 months to 2 years’ work experience in a CLIA-accredited clinical laboratory preferred

  • CPR certification required

  • Strong organizational and communication skills necessary

    • Effective communication skills verbally and written



  • Working knowledge of PCR laboratory equipment and practices

  • Current on all immunizations as required by MVHC.

  • Attention to detail

  • Positive, patient-focused attitude

  • Ability to manage change


 

Working Conditions:


  • Ability to carry 20lbs in weight

  • Lifting up to 50 lbs with or without accommodation

  • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time without resting

  • Walking approx. 30 minutes per hour throughout the day.

  • Withstanding pressure and dealing with emergency situations as needed.

  • Average working hours with possible non-traditional hours.

  • Potential for exposure to blood and body fluids.

  • Ability to deal with upset or disgruntle patients in order to deescalate the situation.

  • Ability to float to other sites as needed for coverage.


 

 

 

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Quality assurance/quality control of highly complex lab

  • Proper handling of medical records and test results



  • Must maintain a professional appearance and demeanor

  • DNA/RNA extraction

  • Assist in performing PCR tests

  • Organize and catalogue samples

  • Participate in routine laboratory tasks and other duties as assigned



  • Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures, complying with legal regulations.

  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.

  • Serves and protects the health center by adhering to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and quality standards.

  • Verifies patient by using two patient identifiers of name and date of birth.

  • Prepare and handle specimens using proper safety and infection control procedures

  • Order lab supplies in a timely manner when needed.

  • Maintain a clean, clutter-free workplace. Ensuring lab area is properly stocked for the next shift before leaving your workstation daily.

  • Precept new staff and students in a positive manner when required by management.

  • Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule; recording results in the quality-control log; identifying and reporting needed changes.

  • Demonstrates proficiency and successfully completes annual competency

  • Follow MVHC policy for HIPAA and strict adherence to protecting health information



  • Accepts constructive feedback, when necessary, from management, for the corrections of behavior(s) that violate MVHC, standards of conduct.

  • Assist the patient in obtaining, processing, and understanding basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions

  • Performs other job-related tasks as directed
