Job Description - Pediatric Cardiovascular Radiology Technologist






Department Overview






The Doernbecher Operating Room at OHSU is a high-acuity surgical environment dedicated to pediatric patients ranging from neonates to young adults. The unit consists of 10 operating rooms, including two Hybrid OR’s for advanced image-guided interventions and complex neurosurgical procedures and other specialized cases.

 

Surgical services span a wide range of pediatric specialties, including general surgery, orthopedics, cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, urology, ENT, plastic surgery, gynecology, trauma, and transplant. Patients present with varying levels of acuity, from routine outpatient procedures to emergent, life threatening conditions. In some cases, patients up to 24 years of age may be treated with anesthesia and provider approval.

 

The multidisciplinary team includes Operating Room Registered Nurses, Cardiac Cath Registered Nurses, Certified Surgical Technologists, Surgeons, Anesthesiologists and Registered Radiology Technologists, Core Techs and support staff. Teams collaborate closely to ensure safe, efficient, and developmentally appropriate surgical care for every patient.

 

The department is open 24/7 to support scheduled, urgent, and emergent procedures. Dedicated on-call teams provide surgical coverage seven days a week, ensuring access to critical surgical interventions for pediatric patients across the region.

Function/Duties of Position






  • Assists physician during cases while operating a variety of complex radiologic imaging equipment including fluoroscopy and ultrasonography within the Cardiac Cath Lab suite. This includes circulating in the procedure room, operating the imaging equipment in both adult and congenital procedures. Cross train to another service area (EP, Hybrid OR,etc).
  • Prep the patient and prepare supplies under sterile conditions for the procedure. Scrub in with the physician and assist in performing procedure. Ability to use fine motor skills with prepping supplies and equipment, including but not limited to, threading stents and balloons on wires.
  • Accurately obtains x-rays for the exams while being respectful to the patient’s abilities and safety issues.
  • Operates automatic injectors and selects the appropriate contrast agent for the patient and the exam under the direction of the physician.
  • In collaboration with other staff, provides patient care during examinations.
  • Responsible for equipment maintenance and use including, but not limited to, recognizing, troubleshooting, reporting, and documenting equipment malfunctions along with coordinating borrowing equipment from other departments.
  • Work independently on call with department physicians and nurse. 








Required Qualifications






  • Two years of experience in the operation of radiologic equipment or an equivalent combination of specialized training and experience AND;

  • Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology program AND;

  • Registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists AND;

  • A valid Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist license issued by the Oregon Board of Medical Imaging AND;

  • Positions with in person patient care: BLS certificate within 30 days of hire or prior to independent practice, whichever comes first

  • Student candidates must obtain the RT(R) (ARRT) certification within 6 months of their hire date. Candidates must have a current Oregon Board of Medical Imaging (OBMI) temporary license for student hires and permanent license for registered hires.









Preferred Qualifications






  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Pediatrics experience preferred 
  • Cardiac Interventional and/or Vascular Interventional certification from ASRT (RCES or RCIS preferred)
  • EP/Cath Lab technologist knowledge, skills, and abilities.








Additional Details






  • Must be able to deal with competing needs and priorities of internal and external customers, including making correct judgments ensuring safe conditions for patients, families, and other personnel.
  • Use of all hospital approved clinical equipment. Significant use of computers, copiers, multi-line phones, and fax.
  • Fast paced admit/recovery environment, with often competing priorities and quick turn-over of patients.
  • Must have the ability to change work location based upon procedure volumes and staffing needs. 
  • Assignment includes Cath Lab and EP procedures, 4 procedure labs, inpatient, day patient, outpatient workflows, and two work sites (South Waterfront/CHH2 as well as the 11C unit of the Main OHSU Hospital). 
  • Must live in a 30-minute call back radius to OHSU Marquam Hill campus for emergent/urgent afterhours on call activations.
