The Peer Mentor will serve as part of an integrated research treatment program designed to support addiction recovery. The Peer Mentor will be primarily responsible for providing recovery support to women and men with a history of substance use, incarceration, and co-occurring disorders. Additionally, the Peer Mentor will use self-recovery experiences as part of the service delivery, attend weekly supervision and research meetings, attend required trainings, interface with community partners and stakeholders, and support clients in reducing barriers to treatment and service engagement. Collaborates with the clinical research team in the ongoing evaluation of comprehensive psycho-social treatment plans. May serve additional roles as required by the Clinic Director.
1. Provide one to one recovery supports
2. Assist individuals in setting up and sustaining self-help supports and establishing community connections
3. Responsible for outreach and engagement of target population
4. May provide or assist individuals in transportation to promote access to services and resources
5. Engage persons who have substance use disorders and who also have, or at risk for, comorbid medical conditions in the array of services offered by the Forensic Drug Diversion clinic and medical care through associated medical providers.
6. Assist clients enrolled in treatment in developing individualized plans for wellness, recovery, and community engagement
7. Helping clients access needed vocational, educational, housing, etc. resources and providing direct interface with those agencies in the community
8. Collaborate and facilitate connection with various community service providers.
9. Provide in-reach as part of a team in the correctional facilities including halfway houses; requires some travel.
10. Attend supervision, meetings and trainings.
11. Works collaboratively with treatment staff
12. Provides support for clients seeking vocational, transitional, social adjustment, community living, and support services.
13. Completes high quality, timely clinic records.
14. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Abilities
1. Demonstrated knowledge of local resources and community-based programs in New Haven and knowledge of transportation system.
2. Demonstrated ability to work “one to one” with individuals with substance use disorders from diverse backgrounds, including individuals with criminal justice involvement. Demonstrated capacity to use first-hand lived experience in this work – use of self-recovery experiences from these experiences.
3. Ability to provide research documentation of interactions and experiences with participants including basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Word.
4. Recovery Support Specialist Certification from the CT Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS).
5. First-hand lived experience as a consumer of substance use services and/or a history of criminal justice involvement.
Preferred Skills and Abilities
Education and training in peer support modalities. Preference for individuals who have experience working with individuals with addiction and/or forensically referred individuals.

This role is a healthcare worker position. Healthcare workers (HCW) are defined as university employees working a healthcare setting who have the potential for direct or indirect exposure to patients, human research subjects or infectious materials including body substance, contaminated medical supplies, devices and equipment, surfaces, or air. HCW have specific health requirements that must be met prior to starting work, including MMR vaccine or immunity, varicella (chickenpox) vaccine or immunity, TB screening, COVID vaccine according to University policy, hepatitis B vaccine or immunity, and annual flu vaccination.
