Penalty Box Attendant

Off-ice officials working the penalty box must strictly study official rules and guidelines while staying equipped and attentive to track all penalties, handle equipment, and assist referees during the game. They are responsible for actively managing the penalty door and player release counts, following safe and precise procedures throughout the game until all materials are returned.

Job Duties (Duties marked with an asterisk are essential functions of this job):

• Please refer to the OIO Manual to familiarize yourself with all penalty box procedures.                                          


• Please review the AHL Rulebook regularly to familiarize yourself with all penalties.                                                  


• Get a clipboard and Penalty worksheet from the OIO filing cabinet                                                                


• Always have two pens and a timing device with you (timer, stopwatch, phone).                                                                                


• You are responsible for recording ALL penalties, not just those of the team whose box you are working.


• Record all times on your worksheet as shown on the clock (time remaining, not elapsed time).             


• Always pay attention to the on-ice action and be alert for sticks and other equipment dropped on the ice.                                                                                                                                                           


• If managing the game pucks, have a puck ready for the official at the start of each period.                                  


• Pay attention to pucks leaving the playing surface and have a replacement ready for the officials.


• Please hand, DO NOT TOSS, all pucks to the officials.


• Watch for the referee’s signals or PTK to alert you of penalties assessed and incoming players.                      


• Once you are aware players will be entering your box, swing the door open wide.


• Once all players have entered the box, close the door and make certain the latch is secured.


• If penalties are not displayed on the penalty clocks, clearly let the player(s) know what time their time expires.


• For penalties on the clock, the following countdown procedure is to be used by all:


• Give player a 30-second warning


• Give player a 15-second warning and stand at the door


• Give player a 10-second warning and place hand on the latch


• With 5-seconds remaining, count down loud enough for the clock operator to hear you


• As you count off the final second, lift the latch and completely swing the door open quickly. DO NOT lift the latch early.

• Listen carefully for official’s whistles and always make sure the penalty clock shows 0:00 before opening the door.

• Players whose penalties will expire at a stoppage of play may require an official to escort them back onto the ice.   This is always the case with Fighting majors.    Likewise, do not release a player if there is any type of altercation in progress.   Always await a signal from an official before opening the door and releasing a player in these situations.


• At the conclusion of the game, YOU are responsible for returning the clipboard to the OIO filing cabinet and should not rely on others to do so.

Qualifications:

• Must be 18 years of age or older on the date of applying


• Must have prior experience or knowledge of the sport of hockey

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Must have the ability to effectively communicate verbally, including delivering safety instructions/directions, verbal cues, and speaking clearly into microphones and radios


• Must have the ability to effectively communicate nonverbally, including maintaining eye contact and giving/receiving safety hand signals


• Must have the ability to comprehend instructions (verbal, demonstrated, and/or written) and retain information


• Must have the ability to remain alert and vigilant at all times


• Must be able to successfully attend and complete all department training requirements


• Must display a positive attitude, an eagerness to learn, and a professional image in compliance with Hershey Entertainment & Resorts guidelines


• Must have the ability to safeguard confidential information

Job Demands:

• Physical requirements include ability to stand (for up to five hours at a time), walk, bend at the waist and knees and have repeated manual dexterity, and the ability to push, pull, and reach above shoulder level, and lift up to thirty-five (35) pounds without assistance


• Employees are subject to a variety of weather conditions, including but not limited to: extreme heat, sun exposure, cold, and inclement weather. Work is almost exclusively outdoors.  


• This position is subject to loud noises.


• Occasional work in high places (up to 300 feet) and climbing stairs is required.


• Must be comfortable with potential exposure to bodily fluids and other spills
