Greater Washington Oncology Associates (GWOA) is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Oncology Pharmacy Technician to support our oncology practice through medication preparation, inventory management, and coordination of specialty pharmaceutical needs. The ideal candidate will possess strong compounding skills, a commitment to patient safety, and experience working in a fast-paced clinical environment. Compounding experience is required. Oncology pharmacy experience is strongly preferred.
Greater Washington Oncology Associates was started in 1990 to provide the highest level of care in Hematology and Oncology in the greater Washington D.C. metro area. The group presently has five medical Hematologists Oncologists and support staff of Laboratory technicians, pharmacy technicians, phlebotomists, and Oncology Nurses. Our practice has six office locations in Washington D.C. as well as Suburban Maryland and serving patients in the whole geographical region.

Position Summary:

Maintains the ordering and stocking of medications and supplies as needed in the clinic. Under supervision of appropriate licensed healthcare professional as defined by State regulations, prepares and mixes medications. Coordinates with drug sales representatives, and pharmaceutical companies to obtain samples, teaching aids, and compassionate drugs. Acts as liaison between Physicians, Nursing, Pharmacy Supervisor and Purchasing in obtaining special order medications.


Key Performance Areas:

1. Medication Preparation & Dispensing

  • Prepare and mix chemotherapy drugs and solutions under appropriate licensed supervision and in compliance with state regulations.

  • Maintain proficiency with the Nucleus medication dispensing system and ensure accurate medication dispensing and par-level management.

  • Review next-day orders with nursing staff to anticipate special medication needs.

2. Inventory, Supply, and Equipment Management

  • Order, stock, and track medical supplies and medications, ensuring appropriate inventory levels and minimal waste.

  • Perform daily and annual maintenance of chemotherapy hoods and manage ambulatory pump documentation.

  • Handle biohazardous waste disposal safely and compliantly, including recordkeeping and coordination with Accounting.

3. Regulatory Compliance & Documentation

  • Maintain required records for compassionate drug programs, clinical trials, biohazard waste, and related pharmacy processes.

  • Ensure compliance with all federal/state laws, patient privacy regulations, OSHA standards, and organizational policies.

4. Training & Collaboration

  • Assist in training new pharmacy technicians and nursing staff on chemotherapy preparation and Nucleus system workflows.

  • Collaborate with nurses, physicians, supervisors, and pharmaceutical representatives as needed to support patient care and operational needs.

5. Operational Flexibility & Professional Responsibilities

  • Support operations across multiple locations as needed and work overtime when required.

  • Participate in mandatory meetings, including annual Safety/OSHA training.

Position Qualifications:

Education

  • Following applicable state regulations, PTCB Certification or Registered as Pharmacy Technician is required.

Minimum Relevant Experience

  • Minimum of three years’ experience in the healthcare field, preferably in a clinical setting as a Pharmacy Technician is preferred.

  • Must be willing to travel occasionally to educational and research meetings as well as training sessions.

Certifications/Licenses

  • Valid State Drivers License for travel to clinics is required.
