Physical Therapist

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

To assess for, plan, organize, develop, and implement medically prescribed and appropriate physical therapy programs in the hospital or in the community to restore function and prevent disability following disease, injury or loss of a body part; help patient reach his/her maximum performance and assume a place in society while learning to live within the limits of his/her capabilities.

$15,000 Sign On Bonus for New Employees

This is a full-time position working 80 hours every two week pay period with a dynamic team of therapists. Days of work are Monday through Friday with typical hours of work 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, with occasional evenings and weekends for sports coverage. Holiday work is as needed. Position includes helping with Jamestown High School sports medicine game coverage.

JOB FUNCTIONS

Quality:

• Assesses patients of all age groups (infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics), develops, plans, and implements a therapy program for each patient, involving physical means such as exercise, massage, heat, water, light and electricity as prescribed by physician.
• Applies a variety of diagnostic and prognostic muscle, nerve, joint and functional ability tests.
• Directs and aids patients in active and passive exercises, muscle re-education and gait and functional training utilizing pulleys and weights, steps and inclined surfaces.
• Provides instruction in posture control and therapeutic procedures to be continued by the patient.
• Directs patients in care and use of wheelchairs, braces, canes, crutches and prosthetic and orthotic devices.
• Adapts conventional physical therapy techniques to meet the needs of patients unable to comprehend verbal commands or voluntarily carry out a regime of therapeutic exercises.
• Evaluates, records and reports on patient's progress for review by other members of the rehabilitative team.
• Completes documentation as per JRMC quality standards
• Assists in updating JRMC policy, procedures, and guidelines.

Service:

• Utilize JRMC excellence tools.
• Conducts in-services and/or participates in training medical and nursing personnel and other workers in physical therapy techniques and objectives.

People:

• Oversees rehab aide to ensure the effectiveness and timeliness of the services provided to the patients.
• Educates students at all levels

Finance:

• Completes work timely
• Requisitions supplies and equipment.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POSITION: (PHYSICAL THERAPIST)

1. PREPARATION AND TRAINING - Must have North Dakota license to practice as a physical therapist. Will complete CPR every other year. Position is required to attend Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training in the appropriate timeframe according to department orientation checklist.
2. WORK EXPERIENCE - One year work experience as a physical therapist is preferred, not required.
3. ATTENDENCE - Punctual and regular attendance is an essential responsibility of each employee at JRMC. Employee are expected to report to work as scheduled, on time and prepared to start working. Employees are also expected to remain at work for their entire work schedule.
4. ANALYTICAL ABILITY - A very high degree of analytical ability is required to perform a majority of the therapist's duties. Analysis is an on going thing all day long with each patient, involving the continual assessment/reassessment of the patient's condition/responses and consequent adjustments needed to be made in regards to treatment plans and goals. Good ability needed to assess patient scheduling and coordinate procedures as needed for efficient operation of the department.
5. INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT - The PT works under the supervision of the Rehab Manager in accordance with established Rehab Department policies and procedures. Should be a self-starter and very responsible as most duties are autonomous in nature. Much of the work is performed with very little instruction being given to the therapist. Errors in judgment may highly impact the financial or public relation stature of the Rehab Department and/or the hospital. Treatments are administered on a physician referral basis.
6. CONTACT WITH OTHERS - A very high degree of a PT's duties involve contact with others (hospital employees, patients, physicians, etc). Imperative that this person maintain good relationships with coworkers, patients, families, visitors. Must be courteous and tactful at all times. Should have good communication skills. Require a very high level of interpersonal skills.
7. RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WELFARE OF OTHERS - The physical and/or emotional well-being of other employees and patients are highly impacted by the performance of the PT; consequences can be serious. Most, if not all, of the therapist's activities during a day impact on the welfare of patients and employees. Responsible for maintaining absolute confidentiality of information.
8. MENTAL/VISUAL EFFORT - Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner. Must demonstrate physical and emotional ability to meet agreed upon work schedule and performance standards required by the position. Required duties are such that concentrated attention must be applied on demand consistent with manual skill requirements in situations that may at times be stressful. Visual acuity necessary for reading charts and working with medical devices; color perception necessary for interpreting testing procedures involving color comparisons. A very high degree of the PT duties require intense mental application or attention to details; this is essentially on a regular basis for the entire work day. Assessment, treatment, planning, goal setting, program development, supervision of staff, documentation, record keeping, scheduling and communications are all included on the above.
9. WORKING CONDITIONS - Majority of position requirements are done within the Rehab Department or Hospital. However, some duties may be performed outside at a school, home, nursing home or other facilities. Requires driving personal vehicle. Frequent walking, lifting and bending are required to perform normal duties. Pace can be very demanding. Requires participation in and complies with JRMC Safety Management Program. Maintains knowledge of and observes Standard Precautions. Practices aseptic techniques whenever appropriate. OSHA Job Classification: This position is defined as a Category I: Employee does have exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Participates in and complies with Jamestown Regional Medical Center Safety Management program. Position is subject to frequent interruptions. Work may be beyond normal working hours. Work may be on weekends and holidays; beyond normal working hours and/or temporarily in other positions when necessary
