Job Description - Physician - Section Head, Emergency Medicine

We've made a lot of progress since opening the doors in 1942, but one thing has never changed - our commitment to serve, heal, lead, educate, and innovate.  We believe that every award earned, every record broken and every patient helped is because of the dedicated employees who fill our hallways.

At Ochsner, whether you work with patients every day or support those who do, you are making a difference and that matters.  Come make a difference at Ochsner Health and discover your future today!

The Section Head, Emergency Medicine provides physician leadership and operational oversight for the OMC–Westbank Emergency Department and the Marrero Freestanding Emergency Department (FSED). The OMC–Westbank Emergency Department manages over 50,000 patient visits annually, while the Marrero FSED manages over 25,000 patient visits annually, representing a high volume, high acuity, and strategically important emergency care footprint within the Ochsner system.

This role serves as a key clinical and operational leader responsible for driving quality, safety, throughput, provider engagement, and patient experience across both sites. The Section Head oversees a multidisciplinary team of Emergency Medicine physicians and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) and works in close partnership with nursing, ancillary, and support services leadership to ensure consistent, high performing emergency care delivery.

The Section Head maintains a dual reporting relationship to Emergency Services Service Line Leadership and reports directly to the Vice President of Medical Affairs, aligning site level performance with system strategy, regulatory standards, and organizational priorities.

Clinical & Operational Leadership

  • Provide strategic physician leadership for two distinct emergency care environments: a high volume hospital based Emergency Department and a high performing Freestanding Emergency Department.
  • Ensure safe, efficient, and high quality emergency care delivery across both sites, with a focus on throughput, patient flow, and clinical outcomes.
  • Align physician and APP practice patterns with system standards, evidence based care, and Emergency Services service line priorities.

Provider Oversight & Engagement

  • Directly oversee and support a team of Emergency Medicine physicians and APPs across both locations.
  • Lead provider recruitment, onboarding, performance assessment, feedback, and professional development.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, professionalism, engagement, and continuous improvement.

Quality, Safety & Patient Experience

  • Partner with nursing and quality leadership to drive performance in patient safety, regulatory compliance, patient satisfaction, and quality metrics.
  • Identify and address clinical variation, performance gaps, and opportunities for improvement using data driven approaches.
  • Support readiness for regulatory surveys, accreditation requirements, and system quality initiatives.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration

  • Collaborate closely with nursing leadership, ancillary departments, operations, and support services to optimize care delivery and team based performance.
  • Serve as a physician liaison between emergency department operations, hospital leadership, and system level Emergency Services leadership.
  • Engage in constructive conflict resolution and promote effective interdisciplinary communication.

Strategic & Financial Stewardship

  • Demonstrate foundational understanding of healthcare finance, reimbursement, staffing models, and productivity in emergency medicine.
  • Support service line initiatives related to growth, access, efficiency, and sustainability for both the hospital based ED and FSED.
  • Contribute to strategic planning aligned with Ochsner’s system goals and operating model.

Leadership Development & Professional Standards

  • Model and reinforce high standards of professionalism, ethical conduct, and physician leadership.
  • Address performance or behavioral concerns using a structured, stepwise approach consistent with medical staff policies.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively in both written and verbal formats, including navigating difficult conversations when required.
