- Lateral Pay Consideration: $33.40/hr. for candidates with at least 3 years of prior qualifying law enforcement experience.
- Signing Bonus: $3,000 – $5,000 depending on prior law enforcement experience, paid in
installments over the first two (2) years of employment.
- Cross Training/Public Safety Certification: Higher rate of pay for firefighting certification.
- Shift Premium: $1.00/hr. for night shift.
- Overtime: Double time rate of pay for over 92 hrs. of work.
- Education Incentive: Eligible Officers may receive a one-time education bonus ranging from $250 – $1,000 based on highest degree obtained.
- Instructor Incentive Pay: Eligible officers may receive $100/month for each approved law
- enforcement instructor certification (e.g., MCOLES, FLETC firearms instructor, taser, etc.)
- Work Schedule: 12-hour shifts with every other weekend off and 10-hr shifts with three consecutive days off.

POSITION SUMMARY This position performs overall patrol and investigative duties for lands in federal trust property, serving citizens and residents within Tribal land and any additional jurisdiction pursuant to Tribal statute or government agreement. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Act as a Tribal Police Liaison to the community to enhance good public relations.
- Know and understand the Native American culture, language, traditions and communities, in order to work with the Tribal community and promote its values.
- Patrol assigned area to include buildings and grounds, check locked doors and windows, and investigate suspicious activity or people; provide crime prevention, investigate incidents of criminal violations, civil infractions, and hunting and fishing violations, by conducting suspect and witness interviews, collecting evidence, and performing follow up duties as directed by the supervisor.
- Receive briefing upon arrival for duty; secure information, ask questions and participate in required departmental training and discussion of information.
- Patrol areas on foot or by motor vehicle; issue warnings and citations to drivers when violations of motor vehicles are observed..
- Respond to calls for service, emergency alarms and other dispatch calls; make decisions based on analysis of situation and facts.
- Dispense unruly crowds at public gatherings within Departmental guidelines.
- Render first aid at the scene of accidents, medical assistance calls, domestic violence calls and report findings.
- Direct and control traffic around fires, accidents and other disruptions as needed.
- Write and file with supervisor: crime reports, and daily activity reports of disturbances, accidents, crimes and tickets issued.
- Assist area police departments in carrying out their functions.
- Assist motorists and citizens living on Tribal land by delivering emergency messages, helping with flat tires, stalled vehicles and potential crime incidents.
- Train new officers in the field according to need and established schedules and guidelines; submit evaluations of trainee performance to supervisor.
- Appear and testify before courts as a subpoenaed witness and/or reporting officer of a crime in cases under adjudication.
- Maintain familiarity with assigned areas and area residents.
- Properly maintain department-issued personal equipment and assigned patrol vehicles.
- Adhere to safety practices as it relates to weapons and assigned vehicles.
- Participate in Tribal member activities and attend Tribal member events that support Tribal sovereignty, culture and customs.
- Interface and maintain effective relationships with Tribal and community members and co-workers. Support Indian Preference initiatives.
- Maintain familiarity and comply with all applicable rules, regulations and codes to ensure efficient operations.
- Maintain and apply knowledge in the area of drugs/narcotics, i.e., abuse identification and the availability on the streets as it relates to routine patrol duties and detention procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality of all information, correspondence, investigative details, and reports.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Possess valid MCOLES license or, if license has lapsed or inactive, can reactivate immediately upon hire.
- If not MCOLES licensed, must be eligible for sponsorship to approved Michigan Police Academy and become MCOLES Certified within 12 months of hire.
- Employees hired without this MCOLES License or who are attending a Michigan-approved academy will start at a reduced hourly rate until completion.
- Upon proof of obtaining an MCOLES License the wage will increase to the standard rate of pay based on the employee’s skills and experience, to be disclosed upon an offer
- Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
- Understand or able to gain knowledge of and appreciate Native American culture and customs.
- Maintain a Valid driver’s license with good driving record; GSA certifiable and must be able to travel; complete Emergency Vehicle Operation training in the academy and once every 3 years.
- Possess CPR/First Aid certification or able to obtain as soon as training is available.
- Complete and pass a comprehensive background investigation and drug screening in accordance with NHBP standards. Convictions for alcohol offenses or having a suspended driver’s license may disqualify an applicant.
- Successful completion of basic recruit training and firearms qualifications. And be able to pass the Federal Firearms Qualification Course of fire.
- Possess Bureau of Indian Affairs Special Law Enforcement Commission or obtain as soon as training becomes available.
- Applicant must sign a Code of Conduct and Code of Ethics.
- Candidates selected for hire will be subject to a physical evaluation and psychological evaluation and employment will be contingent on the results of said test and evaluations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Five years of Police experience.
- MCOLES certified.
- BIA Special Law Enforcement Commission certified.
