Job Description - Preschool Aid

Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor and Preschool Teacher, the Preschool Aid assists in providing a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment for children ages 3-5 enrolled in the Mission Oaks Preschool Program. 



Mission Oaks Preschool emphasizes physical, social, emotional, and cognitive growth through play-based learning and recreation. The Preschool Aid supports the Preschool Teacher in implementing daily activities and fostering a positive learning environment where children can explore, create, develop friendships, and build confidence. 



The ideal candidate is dependable, patient, energetic, and enjoys working with young children. They understand the importance of creating positive experiences for children and families while contributing to a welcoming and supportive classroom environment. 



SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED 


The Preschool Aid works under the direct supervision of the Preschool Teacher and general supervision of the Recreation Supervisor. 



The Preschool Aid does not typically supervise staff but may assist with volunteers and support staff as directed. 



This position is classified as a seasonal, part-time, at-will position. Appointments are made on an annual basis and are subject to program enrollment, budget availability, operational needs, and satisfactory job performance. The preschool follows an annual program calendar; therefore, employees in this classification are not scheduled to work during district holidays, school holidays, winter and spring breaks, or other scheduled program closures. 



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 


Hours and Schedule 



  • Up to20hours per week. 
    • Preschool hours are generally Monday through Thursday between 8:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. 
    • Additional hours may be  for trainings, meetings, special events, and seasonal programs. 




Classroom Responsibilities 



  • Assist the Preschool Teacher with daily classroom activities and routines.
    • Engage children in age-appropriate activities including art, music, movement, sensoryplay, STEM, storytelling, dramatic play, and outdoor recreation. 
    • Help create a positive, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all children. 
    • Support children's social, emotional, and physical development through positive interactions and encouragement. 
    • Assist with classroom transitions, snack time, restroom assistance, and playground supervision. 
    • Monitor children's safety and well-being at all times. 
    • Assist with setting up, organizing, cleaning, and maintaining classroom materials and equipment. 
    • Help prepare activity materials and classroom projects. 
    • Encourage participation and positive behavior while supporting classroom expectations. 
    • Communicate professionally and courteously with parents, guardians, staff, and community members. 
    • Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, and program operations. 




General Responsibilities 



  • Follow all District policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
    • Respond appropriately to emergencies and provide First Aid/CPR as. 
    • Report accidents, incidents, behavioral concerns, and safety hazards to the Preschool Teacher or Recreation Supervisor. 
    • Assist with maintaining a clean, organized, and safe classroom environment. 
    • Attend staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities as . 
    • Provide excellent customer service to participants and families. 
    • Work cooperatively with coworkers, volunteers, and District staff. 
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Basic child development principles.
    • Age-appropriate activities for preschool-aged children.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 


Education 



  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
    Minimum 6 units of coursework in Early Childhood Education is desirable. 


Experience 



  • Experience working with children in a preschool, childcare, recreation, camp, educational, or related setting is desirable.
    • Volunteer experience working with children may be considered.


Licenses and Certifications 



  • Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications required or ability to obtain within established timelines.
    • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License is preferred.


Other Requirements 



  • Successful completion of fingerprinting and background check.
    • TB clearance prior to employment. 
    • Reliable transportation to District facilities and program locations. 




ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS 


Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor recreation environments. Exposure to varying weather conditions including sun, heat, wind, rain, and cold may occur. Frequent interaction with children, parents, and the public is . 




PHYSICAL CONDITIONS 



  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, sit on the floor, and activelyparticipatein children's activities for extended periods. 
    • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds. 
    • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies involving children. 
    • Vision, hearing, and speech sufficient to monitor activities and communicate effectively. 
    • Manual dexterity sufficient to prepare activities, handle classroom materials, and operate office equipment.
