Principal Lead Piping Designer - S3D

Burrow Global has an immediate opening for a Principal Lead Piping designer for a long term assignment in Baytown, TX.

As a Principal Lead Piping Designer, you will play a critical role in executing engineering projects by creating detailed piping designs and 3D models. Working under the direction of the Piping Lead, this role requires collaboration with Project Managers, Engineering Managers, Discipline Leads, and Operations Representatives to ensure successful project delivery within schedule and budget constraints.

Key Responsibilities

• 3D Modeling & Design Generation: Create and modify 3D piping models using Hexagon's SmartPlant 3D (S3D). Generate 2D drawings, including isometrics and orthographic drawings, to support the overall project team.


• Clash Detection & Field Verification: Perform clash detection analysis utilizing laser scans and resolve interference issues to ensure constructability.


• Project Execution Support: Assist the Piping Lead with progress reporting and troubleshooting to ensure the timely completion of engineering projects. Support the expediting of critical piping items and technical goods.


• Documentation & Reporting: Generate technical documentation using company design templates (e.g., line lists, tie-in lists, valve lists). Draft and maintain comprehensive piping documentation (basic, detail, interface, final) and redline P&IDs to reflect project scope.


• Cross-Discipline Collaboration: Participate in multi-discipline workflows, maintaining active cross-communication within the piping team and external sub-teams.


• Model Reviews: Support, coordinate, and prepare materials for discipline model reviews to ensure designs meet business and cross-discipline requirements.


• Compliance & Standards: Adhere to established project standards, piping specifications, and company policies to ensure design results meet technical quality, reliability, and cost-effectiveness requirements.


• Commissioning Support: Assist in the preparation and execution of commissioning and start-up activities to meet project requirements.

Required Qualifications & Skills

• Experience: 10+ years of proven experience in piping design, with specific and extensive experience in brownfield engineering.


• Technical Proficiency: Advanced proficiency in Hexagon's SmartPlant 3D (S3D) software, CAD software, and related drafting tools.


• Experience with laser scanning (Leica preferred).


• Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of piping systems, plant layout design, piping specifications, and industry standards. Familiarity with plant breakdown structures and naming conventions.


• Quality & Validation: Strong understanding of quality control processes for 3D models, as well as model review and validation procedures.


• Problem Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to share technical know-how and drafting expertise with the broader team.


• Certification: Piping Designer Certification is preferred.
