Position:  Lead and execute firmware/software prototype, design, specification, and testing activities through all phases of the product development process - from initial prototype to final manufacturing transfer. 



Nature of Role: Reporting to the Director of Digital Products, we are seeking a Principal IoT Software Architect to provide leadership to a Software Engineering team developing connected medical devices.



Position Description:

An IoT connected medical device system often has firmware in the medical device, and is connected to software running on iPhones, Android phones, and the cloud.

The IoT SW Architect has the prime responsibility of leading the Veranex team of Software Engineers, including the formation of software architecture, creating development plans, and successfully delivering high quality IoT projects requiring software and firmware.

 

Responsibilities:

   Within the role of Principal IoT Software Architect, he/she/they will: 


  • Work with the greater development team, including Systems Engineering, to develop high level software requirements

  • Design, develop and document software systems architecture for small and large projects

  • Support the software development team with translating high level software requirements into detailed software requirements, supporting the documented software architecture  

  • Verify that the documented architecture is implemented according to plan through participation in code reviews and design reviews throughout the process

  • Dictate design choices to software developers, including, but not limited to:  platforms, coding, and technical levels

  • Create project software development plans, which may favor either a waterfall or agile development process

  • Work with the program management team on creating accurate software project schedule

  • Maintain and continually improve the software architecture and development process, as technologies and teams evolve

  • Integrate embedded systems applications with other software component

  • Mentor junior staff and serve as software onboarding liaison for new employees

  • Assist hardware and firmware engineers in development of new platforms and in troubleshooting hardware/software interfaces

  • Document and perform integration, testing, debugging and installation support and activities

  • Participate with project team in the design and implementation of new and enhanced products

  • Develop control algorithms to optimize module and display system performance

  • Interface with design team to support functional test and measurement requirements

  • Initiate and maintain FDA software design control documents

  • Collaborate with DevOps to support manufacturing by automating software releases to production within a mature Ci/CD pipeline


Requirements:  A Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Data Science or similar field coupled with 10+ years of experience in systems software development within the medical device arena is required along with the following key attributes:

  • Skilled in the art of software systems architecture for both embedded software and larger interconnected software systems

  • Experience leading distributed software teams in a multi-disciplined environment

  • Ability to translate user needs and system design specifications and into software requirements

  • Experience designing and developing cloud, software, and firmware architecture and applications in response to functional specifications

  • Experience using industry standard tools and practices to document and visualize software system architecture

  • Experience with Data Management, Data Security, and Data Governance

  • Experience with integrating and maintaining IoT devices to the cloud, iPhone and Android software apps

  • Experience in developing cloud-connected applications and devices 

  • Experience in the development of both native and cross-platform solutions

  • Experience creating software development plans and schedules 

  • Extensive experience working with Agile software development and DevOps

  • Experience with integrating new and existing cloud infrastructures with 3rd party systems (e.g. EMRs, cloud hybrid models, LIMS, EDCs, etc.)

  • Experience and solutioning within various HIPAA-compliant PaaS

  • Experience with ISO 13485, IEC 62304, IEC 82304, FDA design controls or similar regulatory environment


 Preferred:

  • Ability to integrate firmware with a variety of hardware platforms and to analyze and troubleshoot the software/firmware interface

  • Experience designing and developing embedded applications with intensive, interrupt driven communications for real-time process control applications using multiple serial channels and communications protocols (proprietary and standard based)

  • Experience in sensor and instrumentation integration 

  • Certified Cloud Solutions Architect (AWS or Azure)

  • Integrate firmware with a variety of hardware platforms and to analyze and troubleshoot the hardware/firmware interface

  • Extensive use of debugging tools, including software debuggers and basic use of electronic diagnostic devices for software development, integration, debugging, and troubleshooting
