Product Designer

Hyperlite Mountain Gear builds the world’s best ultralight backcountry packs, tents, and accessories. Our gear has been carried through the Grand Canyon, up Everest and K2, and along the world’s most iconic thru-hikes. We’re looking for a Product Designer who’s as passionate about the backcountry as the people who rely on our gear.

As Product Designer, you’ll own at least one product per season from initial brief through commercialization. You will be developing design concepts, solving problems creatively, and building all patterns and documentation for your assigned products. Products can include backpacking shelters and tents, backpacks, accessories, and apparel. Deep knowledge of backcountry and multi-day hiking and camping is essential; hands-on experience with the Hyperlite product line is a big plus.

Responsibilities

• Translating product brief into a design concept
• Building sewn mockups and initial prototypes to validate design concept
• Creating and maintaining product patterns and technical documentation for assigned products
• Produce prototypes and test functionality in the field and the shop
• Improve the design of existing products
• Plan and execute multiple field tests per product, and aggregate and share field test data and feedback
• Collaborate with other Product Designers to make product changes based on field test feedback
• Considering MSRP and target cost, as laid out in the product brief, when choosing materials and trims 

Requirements

• 3+ years of experience as a Product Designer, patternmaker, or similar role, ideally in tents, backpacks, and apparel
• Hands-on experience with computer-aided design (CAD) and patternmaking tools. Direct experience with Optitex PDS is a plus but not required.
• Strong sewing skills, with the ability to build and refine your own prototypes
• Solid time-management skills and adaptability in a small-team environment
• BSc/MSc in Product Design, Manufacturing/Design Engineering, or a relevant field, or equivalent hands-on experience
• Genuine backcountry experience and familiarity with the Hyperlite product line is a big plus
