Project Engineer II – Mechanical



Position Summary

The Project Engineer II – Mechanical is responsible for designing and executing mechanical work packages for automation and material handling system integration projects. This position focuses on the design and release of mechanical assemblies, equipment layouts, and technical documentation while ensuring designs meet system requirements, customer specifications, manufacturability standards, and project timelines.

The role works closely with engineering teams, suppliers, manufacturing partners, and customers throughout the project lifecycle. The Project Engineer II will also provide onsite support during installation, testing, and commissioning and may provide technical guidance to junior engineers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and release of mechanical assemblies, equipment layouts, drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) for automation and material handling projects.

  • Ensure mechanical designs meet system requirements, customer specifications, manufacturability standards, and project cost targets.

  • Perform engineering calculations, tolerance analyses, and design reviews to ensure equipment reliability and performance.

  • Develop and maintain accurate mechanical drawings and technical documentation.

  • Collaborate with controls, electrical, software, and other engineering teams to ensure successful system integration.

  • Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), installation, and commissioning through hands-on troubleshooting and system validation.

  • Work with suppliers, manufacturing partners, and offshore engineering teams to ensure equipment is designed, manufactured, delivered, and installed correctly.

  • Identify and resolve mechanical design and installation issues throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Participate in onsite system validation and integration activities at customer locations.

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers as needed.

  • Contribute lessons learned and engineering feedback to improve future system and equipment designs.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.

  • 2–5 years of mechanical design experience within automation, material handling, capital equipment, or a similar industry.

  • Strong proficiency with 3D CAD modeling and mechanical documentation, including tools such as:

    • Autodesk Inventor

    • AutoCAD

    • SolidWorks



  • Experience designing mechanical equipment, assemblies, and layouts for complex systems.

  • Knowledge of materials, fabrication methods, manufacturing processes, and GD&T.

  • Ability to independently manage and execute mechanical design responsibilities within multidisciplinary engineering projects.

  • Proven ability to deliver mechanical designs on time and within project scope.

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering teams, suppliers, manufacturing partners, and customers.

  • Comfortable working onsite to validate, troubleshoot, and integrate equipment within active system environments.


Travel & Work Environment

  • Ability to travel up to 30% to support customer installation, integration, testing, and commissioning activities.

  • Comfortable working in office, manufacturing, shop, warehouse, and customer-site environments.

  • Must be comfortable with occasional exposure to noise, confined spaces, temperature changes, and active installation environments.


Ideal Background

The ideal candidate will have hands-on mechanical design experience supporting automated material handling, conveyor, warehouse automation, or other complex capital equipment systems. This individual should be comfortable owning mechanical design packages from initial design through installation and commissioning while collaborating with multiple engineering disciplines to successfully deliver customer projects.
