Job Description - Property Room Technician - Sheriff's Office

Hiring range: $54,017 to $63,460 ($25.97 to $30.51 per hour). Starting rate will depend on experience, education, and qualifications. Advancement opportunities exist for individuals motivated to move up within Anoka County.

Position Description

Join the Anoka County Sheriff's Office (ACSO), where every day our members follow our mission "To protect and serve the community in a manner that preserves the public trust." We invite you to consider joining these public safety professionals as a Property Room Technician. This position performs a variety of duties which include receiving, recording, storing, and safeguarding evidence collected from crime investigations.

This is a full-time, non-exempt, on-site position.

Pay & Benefits

  • Salary: $54,017 to $63,460 ($25.97 to $30.51 per hour).

  • Anoka County Salary Schedule Grade 30- LELS 567: $54,017 to $72,904 ($25.97 to $35.05 per hour). 2026 salary ranges to be determined pending ratification of labor agreement.

Work Location

  • This position will work at the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office, located at 13301 Hanson Blvd NW, Andover, MN 55304.

  • Expected work hours are Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Schedule may vary based on business needs and at supervisor discretion. 

Job Duties and Responsibilities
These examples are not all inclusive and are intended to be illustrative of primary responsibilities of an Anoka County Property Room Technician.

  • Receive, record, store, and safeguard evidence collected from crime investigations.

  • Prepare records of articles according to chain of custody procedures and maintain evidence database.

  • Release property or evidence being retained to designated party for court presentation or other disposition.

  • Maintain storage facility and coordinate proper disposal of sensitive materials including narcotics, bio-hazardous materials, firearms, and explosives.

  • Coordinate and satisfy requests for property viewings in accordance with all rules of evidence and data privacy laws.

  • Maintain inventory and order supplies pertaining to evidence and property management.

  • Conduct tours and presentations to groups visiting the laboratory as necessary.

  • Assist with other lab functions as needed.

  • Provide credible testimony in a court of law.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

  • Requires a high school diploma.

  • Must submit DNA sample for elimination purposes.

  • Must successfully complete and pass a drug test and thorough background investigation.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

  • Degree in Forensic Science, Chemistry, Biology or related field.

  • Knowledge of procedures and processes used in a laboratory.

  • Knowledge of Federal and State laws, regulations and guidelines relating to criminal law and procedures, specifically criminal evidence law.

No tattoos, scars or brands that qualify as "Unauthorized Tattoos" under the Sheriff's Office Policy 1044.3 are allowed under any circumstances by any member of the Anoka County Sheriff's Office. Tattoos on the head, face, neck, or hands are prohibited. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis. (Complete policy available upon request).

Physical Demands and Work Conditions

  • Laboratory environment, indoor work sites

  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus, such as to work on computers. Ability to see colors, shades, and brightness 

  • Hearing abilities required for general and phone communication, signals, and machine sounds

  • Ability to detect, discern, and tolerate a wide range of scents required for safety and performance of essential duties

  • Cognitive abilities required include problem solving, prioritization of tasks, short- and long-term memory, interpreting and understanding written documents, and general mathematical skills

  • Assignments require several hours of varied physical activity in addition to viewing a computer screen, sitting at a desk, or walking/standing 

  • Physical activity may include repeated bending, stooping, reaching, frequent wrist and finger manipulation to complete computer work and handle medical equipment with a high degree of accuracy, and occasionally pushing carts weighing over 300 lbs. 

  • Equipment used includes computers, phones, and standard office equipment in addition to Forensic equipment depending on assignment 

  • Additional physical/mental requirements that occur may not be listed above, but are inherent in performing the position's essential functions

  • Exposure to bodily fluids, infectious agents, radiation, toxic or caustic chemicals, and other hazards is possible while performing essential duties

Union Representation

This position is represented by a collective bargaining agreement between Anoka County and the Law Enforcement Labor Services.
