The Vermont Department of Health is looking for our next Public Health Laboratory Microbiology Program Chief!
The Microbiology Program Chief serves as the scientific and managerial lead of the microbiology program in our public health laboratory. They provide high-level leadership to a 14-person team. They direct the work of this team to provide clinical testing, surveillance testing, and response to outbreaks or investigations of high importance to public health.

AHS BACKGROUND CHECKS: Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position. In accordance with AHS Policy 4.02, Hiring Standards, Vermont and/or national criminal record checks, as well as DMV and adult and child abuse registry checks, as appropriate to the position under recruitment, will be conducted on candidates, with the exception of those who are current classified state employees seeking transfer, promotion or demotion into an AHS classified position or are persons exercising re-employment (RIF) rights.
Work is performed in a laboratory which tests for hazardous materials, infectious diseases and chemical toxins. Protective clothing and use of a respirator may be required. Manual dexterity and good vision are required to operate sophisticated laboratory instruments. Duties may involve court appearances, and attendance at a variety of meetings for which private means of transportation must be available. Some evening or weekend work may be required.
Master's degree in a biological or physical science including at least 18 hours in microbiology AND two (2) years or more of professional level experience in a health or environmental laboratory (or related lab) including demonstrated experience in lab testing management in the areas of planning, monitoring and technical evaluation INCLUDING one (1) year or more of experience in a supervisory capacity.
OR
Bachelor's degree in a biological or physical science including at least 18 hours in microbiology AND four (4) years or more of professional level experience in a health or environmental laboratory (or related lab) including demonstrated experience in lab testing management in the areas of planning, monitoring and technical evaluation INCLUDING two (2) years or more of experience in a supervisory capacity.
Special Note: Appointees may be required to qualify as a technical supervisor for microbiology under CLIA '88.
