Job Description - Recreation Supervisor

Department: Recreation                                                                                                                               Full-Time: Exempt



POSITION SUMMARY


The Recreation Supervisor performs duties in accordance with Recreation Services Youth Programming. The Recreation Supervisor is responsible for organizing, creating, budgeting, promoting and implementing a variety of recreation programs. General responsibilities include but are not limited to supervision over staff and volunteers in related areas of responsibility. Programs include but are not limited to Circle of Friends, Summer Camps, and events. 



Essential Responsibilities



  • Organizes implements and evaluates a comprehensive selection of programs designed to meet the needs of the community. 

  • Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, terminates, schedules and evaluates staff, volunteers and instructors. 

  • Orders and distributes programs supplies as needed, maintaining appropriate inventory and supply for all programs. 

  • Prepares annual budget projections and monitors revenue and expenses in areas of responsibility. 

  • Prepares seasonal program guide information and publicity materials in cooperation with the marketing department. 

  • Evaluates the effectiveness of existing programs and submits recommendations for program development, changes and pricing structure as required. 

  • Maintains required records of programs, fees and class participation statistics as required. 

  • Conducts required training and safety programs as established and recognized by the Dundee Township Park District.

  • Coordinates assistance as needed from Parks or Facility Management for programs and events. 

  • Develops general knowledge of Park District programs to respond to specific questions or direct guest to the appropriate staff member.

  • Complies with all safety and loss prevention policies. 

  • Inform supervisor of any unsafe conditions or hazardous work procedures. 

  • Correct any unsafe conditions, if possible, and instruct co-workers on safety procedures.

  • Attends professional conferences and workshops to promote knowledge in related areas of responsibility. 

  • Completes all additional duties as prescribed by management.

  • Assists other Park District employees when needed.



Communication & Customer Service



  • Employee must be able to follow directions and communicate in English both verbally and in writing.



  • Employee must have the ability to read and understand materials printed in English.

  • Employee must possess good problem-solving skills and have the capacity to act rationally and calmly in high stress and/or emergency situations.

  • Must have the ability to develop and maintain positive and effective working relationships and to promote and maintain high morale and enthusiasm.

  • Employee represents the Dundee Township Park District in a professional manner.


 


Safety & Risk Management



  • Maintains a working knowledge of all general and departmental-specific safety rules.

  • Uses material handling equipment or staff assistance when lifting and/or moving objects 50 pounds or heavier.

  • Reports any work-related injuries to supervisor promptly. 

  • Immediately reports all accidents and unsafe conditions to the supervisor.

  • Attends all required safety program and in-service education meetings.

  • Corrects unsafe conditions, if possible, alerts co-workers to potential unsafe conditions and/or reports them to supervisor. 

  • Instructs co-workers, when necessary, on safety procedures or precautions. 

  • Follows incident/accident reporting and notification procedures



Qualifications


Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, or closely related field preferred; minimum 3 plus years’ experience required in recreation program management or a combination of education, experience, training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to plan, design and implement activities, ability to assign, coordinate and supervise. First Aid, CPR and AED certification is required or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire. This position requires a valid and maintained Illinois Driver’s License, minimum classification “D”.



Knowledge, Skills & Abilities



  • Computer aptitude preferred.

  • Knowledge and skills in technology, or the ability to learn.

  • Reading, writing, speaking and understanding English language.

  • Possess good problem-solving skills and has capacity to act rationally and calmly in high stress and/or emergencies.

  • Ability to execute the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.



Hours Standards


This is a full-time position, year-round position, 40 hours exempt position. This position is generally Monday through Friday, may include weekends and/or holidays. Hours are dependent on business needs, but will include day, night, weekends and holidays.
