Registered Nurse - Adult PCU

We are seeking an experienced, compassionate Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Progressive Care/Step-Down Unit. This role provides high-quality care to patients who require closer monitoring and more complex nursing interventions than a medical-surgical unit, but who do not require intensive-care-level services.

The ideal candidate is clinically strong, calm under pressure, highly organized, and able to recognize and respond quickly to changes in patient condition.

Position Summary

The Progressive Care/Step-Down RN delivers comprehensive, patient-centered nursing care for adult patients with intermediate-acuity needs. The nurse manages complex medical conditions, continuous monitoring, frequent assessments, medication titration within scope and policy, patient/family education, and interdisciplinary coordination to support safe progression of care.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform thorough initial and ongoing patient assessments, identify changes in condition, and promptly escalate concerns through appropriate clinical channels.
• Monitor, interpret, and respond appropriately to cardiac rhythms, hemodynamic status, respiratory status, neurologic changes, laboratory results, and other clinical indicators.
• Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, case management, rehabilitation services, and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
• Educate patients and families on diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, discharge needs, and warning signs requiring follow-up.
• Maintain accurate, timely, and complete clinical documentation in the electronic health record.
• Support a culture of safety, teamwork, accountability, service excellence, and respectful communication.

Required Qualifications

• Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse license in the applicable state.
• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; ADN or BSN accepted, with BSN preferred.
• Minimum of two years of recent acute-care nursing experience required.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required or obtained within the organization’s designated timeframe.
• Demonstrated ability to assess and manage patients with complex medical, cardiac, respiratory, neurologic, and post-procedural needs.
• Strong critical-thinking, communication, prioritization, and clinical decision-making skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience in Progressive Care, Step-Down, Intermediate Care, ICU, or other high-acuity acute-care settings.
• Experience with telemetry interpretation, dysrhythmia recognition, non-invasive ventilation, vasoactive medication monitoring, and rapid-response escalation.
• National specialty certification, such as PCCN, CCRN, or equivalent.
• Charge nurse, preceptor, or shared-governance experience.

Qualifications 

• Requires Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) preferred. 

• Education: The Registered Nurse (RN) must have graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program.

  1. Exceptions: Candidates who have not graduated from a nationally accredited program may be considered if they possess more than two years of acute care experience. Such exceptions are subject to review and approval by the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO).

• Requires an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license. 

• Requires that the RN has graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program. 

• Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA. 

• Other Advanced Life Support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
