PREOP/PHASE 2
Prepare patients for surgery by assessing hemodynamics, consents, history,
labs, meds, and NPO status; communicate promptly w ith physicians and OR
team to prevent delays. Provide emotional support and education to patients
and families. Postoperatively, assess readiness for discharge, transition
patients home or to rehab facilities, and deliver clear discharge instructions
using critical thinking and decision-making skills.
PACU: Responsible for working with other healthcare professionals to help treat
patients undergoing ambulatory surgery and other procedures including but
not limited to; Colonoscopies, Ortho sports and minor trauma, Ortho hand,
GYN, Laparoscopic, Plastics, Urology, General, Rectal, Podiatry, Pediatrics.
Monitors and recovers patients, administers medications, keeps records, consults with
healthcare providers, educates patients and more.
Job responsibilities:
PACU RN:
Demonstrates competent clinical skills and performs thorough patient
assessments to ensure quality outcomes per ASPAN/AH/Facility policies and
procedures.
Provides direct patient care supporting the delivery model and team concept for
all patient populations.
Analyzes clinical situations critically, makes sound decisions, and escalates
concerns appropriately.
Maintains complete and accurate documentation according to facility standards
and policies.
Assumes responsibility for documenting nursing process components and
patient progress toward outcomes, including discharge planning.
Consistently records patient responses to medications, treatments, and
interventions in the medical record.
Demonstrates professional practice, leadership, and critical thinking skills.
Prioritizes, multitasks, and problem-solves to meet changing patient and unit
needs.
Functions as a team leader, mentor, and preceptor; provides support and
guidance to staff.
Participates in cost containment through efficient use of supplies and resources.
Maintains a safe environment for patients, staff, and self.
Practices safe transfer techniques, proper body mechanics, and standard
precautions.
Demonstrates knowledge of hospital policies and ASPAN standards of practice.
Promotes patient satisfaction through courteous, compassionate, and timely
interactions.
Respects patient rights to privacy, dignity, and confidentiality in accordance
with HIPAA.
Fosters a positive and healing environment consistent with organizational
values.
Serves as Charge RN at times to ensure optimal use of surgical schedules and
daily OR operations.
Identifies and resolves scheduling conflicts; facilitates bay turnaround and
patient flow.
Demonstrates leadership, organization, and calm decision-making under
pressure.
Promotes effective communication between physicians, nursing staff, and the
care team.
Identifies personal knowledge and skill gaps; seeks ongoing education and
training.
Participates in meetings, reads communications to stay informed, and engages
in committees.
Contributes feedback to support continuous unit and hospital improvement.
Participates in annual evaluations by submitting accomplishments and
establishing future goals.
Utilizes clinical software effectively and demonstrates proficiency in Microsoft
Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
Performs additional assignments as needed to meet departmental and
organizational needs.

Education:
Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required
Bachelors Degree or Masters Degree of Nursing preferred
All ASN must complete their BSN studies within five years of their start date
License & Certifications:
Current NJ (New Jersey) Registered Nurse License required
BLS and ACLS required
PALS preferred
CAPA, CPAN, or CCRN preferred
Experience:
Minimum 2-3 years related work experience in a Pre-op, PACU, critical care or OR/ambulatory surgery center setting.
Additional job requirements:
Ability to read, write and speak English.
Flexibility in shifts according to surgery schedule and hours of operation
Float to other MMC surgical services areas as needed
