SUPRVSR2 – SUPERVISOR, SURGICAL SERVICES - 0045

SUMMARY

Coordinates the daily activities for the surgery facilities. To prioritize, plan and perform professional nursing care, resolve patient care problems and interact with patients, families, surgical staff, other team members and Anesthesia. To resolve problems with patients, physicians, surgical staff, Anesthesia staff and other members of the organization. Main function will be dedicated to the daily running of the patient flow in surgery.

JOB DUTIES

Provide instruction to the staff, physicians and patient and/or significant other.

Provide explanation to the staff, physicians and patient and/or significant other.

Explain nursing intervention.

Organize and direct Operating schedule and staff.

Assist in lifting and transporting of patients and providing a safe and comfortable environment for patients and staff.

Monthly random observation of the following: Two patient identifiers on all patients, proper permits, proper time out’s, once in the room and once prior to incision. All action must stop with the time out. No scalpel passed without a proper time out and proper marking of the surgical site, double check that all fluids on the sterile field are properly marked. Instrument counts are properly performed per policy, and the instrument sheet must be used.

 SPECIFIC JOB DEMANDS

Strength: Medium Work - Lifting, Carrying, Pushing, Pulling 20 - 50 Lbs. occasionally, 10 - 25 Lbs. frequently or up to 10 Lbs. constantly.

Stooping: Occasionally - Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.

Reaching: Frequently - Extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.

Handling: Frequently - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands. Fingers are involved only to the extent that they are an extension of the hand, such as to turn a switch or shift automobile gears.

Fingering: Frequently - Picking, pinching, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.

Feeling: Frequently - Noting attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture, by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.

Talking: Frequently - Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word to impart oral information to clients or to the public and to convey detailed spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.

Hearing: Frequently - Perceiving the nature of sounds by ear.

Near Acuity: Frequently - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less.

Accommodation: Occasionally - Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This factor is required when doing near point work at varying distances from the eye.

Color Vision: Frequently - Ability to identify and distinguish colors.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

Professional knowledge of nursing theory and practice at a level normally acquired through completion of an accredited School of Nursing.

Previous Operating Room experience is necessary.

Current State Nursing License or having made application for licensure.

Ability to organize and direct Operating schedule and staff. Assist in lifting and transporting of patients and providing a safe and comfortable environment for patients and staff.

Main function must be dedicated to the daily running of the patient flow board. Must be willing to give breaks for circulators and scrub techs and assist in any manner to complete the daily schedule.

May have to take call if staff is unable to cover the call schedule. May have to work overtime, weekends or holidays as directed.

Must be willing to carry either a beeper or cell phone to provide staff with a contact if emergency situations occur after normal business hours.

ACLS, PALS, and BLS required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Normal patient care environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, and temperature changes. Most of the time is standing or walking.

Subject to certain distasteful patient care activities and exposure to communicable diseases, and other illness or diseases.

Must be able to take limited call and be within 15 to 20 minutes response time to hospital when on call. May have to work overtime and take call as directed, work weekends and/or holiday hours.

May have exposure to chemical, X-ray, disinfectants and other hazardous products.

Subject to occasional distasteful patient care activities and exposure to communicable diseases.

Work hours are flexible based upon need and may exceed 40 hours per week.

May be exposed to potential hazards such as chemical wastes, body wastes, fluids and other possible infectious materials.

Subject to unpredictable actions of patients
