Job Summary



Following established policies, procedures, and professional nursing standards, the Registered Nurse delivers safe, high-quality nursing care to neonatal, pediatric, and adolescent patients with a wide variety of complex medical conditions. The Registered Nurse is responsible for coordinating, delegating, and monitoring care activities assigned to other members of the interdisciplinary care team to ensure optimal patient outcomes. All duties are performed in accordance with the policies, mission, vision, and core values of Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital. The Registered Nurse promotes a safe environment for patients, families, visitors, and employees by consistently adhering to infection prevention and control policies and protocols.

Key Responsibilities



1.



Pediatric Complex Care Assessment
Performs and documents comprehensive initial and ongoing assessments of infants, children, and adolescents with complex medical conditions in accordance with established policies, procedures, and professional nursing standards. Demonstrates advanced pediatric nursing assessment skills, including the ability to recognize subtle changes in physiological, developmental, and emotional status. Distinguishes between baseline chronic conditions and acute changes, promptly communicating deviations to the medical team. Maintains continual vigilance to changes in patient condition, demonstrates attention to detail, initiative, and sound clinical judgment, and provides care with compassion, patience, and kindness toward patients and families. Accurately recognizes symptoms, follows provider orders, and initiates and documents nursing interventions with a high degree of precision.

Family-Centered and Interdisciplinary Communication
Maintains clear, accurate, and timely documentation within the medical record to support continuity of care for medically complex pediatric patients. Provides thorough handoff communication, including complex histories, baseline functional status, technological dependencies, and care priorities, to ensure safe transitions between shifts and disciplines. Always maintain strict confidentiality of patient and organizational information. Communicates effectively with patients and families, recognizing their essential role in care, and provides ongoing education regarding care plans, interventions, and condition changes. Consistently contributes to a positive, collaborative, and supportive work environment through respectful communication, teamwork, and professionalism.

Care Planning and Coordination
Plans, prioritizes, and organizes workloads to support safe, developmentally appropriate, and goal-directed care for pediatric patients with complex and chronic conditions. Collaborates with medical staff, therapists, care coordinators, social workers, and other interdisciplinary team members to develop, implement, and evaluate individualized plans of care. Actively supports family and caregiver education related to disease management, medical technology, medications, and care routines, recognizing cultural differences, health literacy levels, and educational barriers.

Professional Practice and Advocacy
Practices within the scope of the State Nurse Practice Act, nursing department standards, and hospital policies and procedures. Represents Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital in a professional manner through communication, conduct, and appearance.



5.



Safety and Infection Prevention
Delivers pediatric nursing care with a strong emphasis on safety, risk reduction, and infection prevention for medically vulnerable populations. Adheres to all Ranken Jordan policies related to hand hygiene, isolation precautions, and infection prevention protocols. Safely administers medications and treatments in accordance with medical staff orders, pediatric dosing guidelines, and established safety checks, recognizing the increased risks associated with complex conditions and polypharmacy.

Ongoing Education and Competency
Participates in required and ongoing pediatric and specialty-focused education, including competencies related to complex care, medical technology, and evolving best practices. Maintains clinical knowledge and skills necessary to provide high-quality care to pediatric and adolescent populations with complex medical needs.

Additional Responsibilities
Performs all other duties as assigned by the Charge Nurse and/or Nursing Leadership to support safe patient care and unit operations.



 


















Patient Population Served:



Ranken Jordan is dedicated to delivering services to patients with complex medical needs, including infants, children, and adolescents.



Education and Experience Required:



The Registered Nurse must have a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Missouri and hold a current Basic Life Support (BLS) from RQI.  Current PALS certification or completion within orientation. Two years of pediatric nursing experience preferred.



 













































































Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities



Knowledge:


· Advanced knowledge of pediatric nursing principles, growth and development, and family-centered care for infants, children, and adolescents with complex and chronic medical conditions.


· Strong understanding of common and rare pediatric diagnoses, comorbidities, and medically fragile conditions, including technology dependence (e.g., tracheostomies, ventilators, feeding tubes, central lines).


Clinical Skills:


· Demonstrated ability to perform thorough, accurate, and ongoing pediatric nursing assessments, recognizing subtle changes in physiological, developmental, and emotional status.


· Strong critical thinking and clinical judgment skills to distinguish baseline conditions from acute changes and to initiate appropriate nursing interventions.


· Proficiency in safely managing and monitoring complex medical equipment and therapies commonly used in pediatric complex care settings.


· Ability to prioritize, organize, and deliver safe, efficient, and developmentally appropriate nursing care in a dynamic clinical environment.


Abilities:


· Ability to function both independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary healthcare team.


Physical ability to meet the demands of the role, including assisting with patient mobility, performing bedside care, and standing or walking for extended periods.
