Position Overview

The Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery is seeking to hire a Reimbursement Officer I for the Chicago-Read Mental Health Center located in Chicago, Illinois to perform a variety of professional duties relevant to reimbursement procedures. Investigates and evaluates the financial status of patients. Reviews reimbursement accounts on a regularly scheduled basis. Initiates action for collection of unpaid charges. Corresponds and confers with relatives, conservators, attorneys, insurance companies, legislators, federal/state agencies, and other parties to obtain information.

Essential Functions


  • Performs a variety of professional duties relevant to reimbursement procedures. 

  • Reviews reimbursement accounts on a regularly scheduled basis. 

  • Initiates action for collection of unpaid charges including legal documents for claims needing court action. 

  • Corresponds and confers with relatives, conservators, attorneys, insurance companies, legislators, federal/state agencies, and other parties to obtain information. 

  • Interviews relatives, conservators, attorneys, insurance representatives and other parties to obtain the information needed to determine wills, deeds, birth certificates and other relevant documents. 

  • Participates in all Department of Human Services (DHS) and Chicago-Read Mental Health Center mandatory training. 

  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications


  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college, with courses in accounting, economics or business administration, preferably including courses in insurance, estate and probate law. 

  • Requires one (1) year of work experience in the reimbursement field. 

Conditions of Employment


  • Requires the ability to utilize office equipment, including personal computers.

  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check. 

  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.

Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:00pm; 30-minute unpaid lunch
