Job Description - Director of Engineering, Materials

About Us

Higharc is a VC-backed startup that is changing how new homes are designed and built. Join a founding team who’ve shipped products for Autodesk, Electronic Arts, Nike, and Apple. We have raised a total of $83M with support from top-notch venture capital firms and more than 18 strategic investors—industry leaders in construction, building products manufacturing, and distribution.

Higharc is seeking a Director of Engineering, Materials to lead the engineering organization behind one of our most significant company bets: turning our estimation capabilities and supplier relationships into a scalable, data-driven materials program. This role reports to the VP of Engineering and is remote within the US or Canada.

What You'll Do

You'll own engineering delivery across materials estimation, vendor integrations, and our emerging materials marketplace — from day-to-day execution to longer-horizon platform thinking. You'll lead through an Engineering Manager and a growing team, setting the operating rhythm, delivery culture, and technical standards for the Materials organization.

This role sits at the intersection of product, sales, and external partners. You don't need to arrive knowing the homebuilding materials space cold — but you do need to build credibility fast, earn trust from people who've lived in the domain, and translate ambiguity into clear priorities and reliable delivery. As estimation, integrations, and marketplace work mature from pilot-stage experiments into distinct product surfaces, you'll also be shaping how the team itself is structured and what it needs to look like to scale.

Expect to:

  • Own delivery across materials estimation, vendor/supplier integrations, and the materials marketplace — from execution to platform strategy

  • Lead and develop Engineering managers and a growing team of engineers, building the culture and operating model for the Materials org

  • Drive predictable, reliable shipping with clear priorities and strong cross-functional alignment across Product, Sales, and Customer Success

  • Partner with Product to define and execute the materials marketplace roadmap — supplier onboarding, catalog and SKU integrations, estimating workflow improvements, and BOM API expansion

  • Represent engineering in external supplier and vendor conversations, shaping relationships that affect how our platform is built and adopted

  • Hire, onboard, and develop engineers as the materials program scales

  • Evolve team structure and ownership boundaries as distinct surfaces emerge from early-stage work

About You

You're an engineering leader who knows what broken delivery looks like — and more importantly, how to fix it without burning down what's already working. You take ownership of outcomes, not just process. You're comfortable stepping into domains where you're not yet the expert, because you build credibility through curiosity, good judgment, and consistency.

You like the product side of the job. You don't just execute against priorities handed to you — you help shape them. You can hold a conversation with a supplier, a sales rep, and a senior engineer in the same afternoon and walk away with clearer direction for each.

You have:

  • 5+ years of engineering management experience, including managing Engineering Managers and building teams from scratch

  • A strong track record of diagnosing and improving delivery in complex, cross-functional environments

  • Experience owning a product area end-to-end alongside Product partners, with real influence over priorities and trade-offs

  • Comfort leading in a domain you're new to — you earn trust quickly through process, curiosity, and follow-through

  • A builder's instinct: you care about shipping things that matter and creating the conditions for your team to do their best work

A major plus if you also bring:

  • Background in construction tech, proptech, procurement, supply chain, or adjacent industries

  • Experience building or scaling a marketplace or multi-sided platform at an early stage
