Travel: Minimal; occasional site travel may be required
Industry: Nuclear / Energy

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Nuclear Fire Protection Engineer to support engineering, design, analysis, and modification activities for nuclear facilities.

This position will provide fire protection engineering expertise in support of facility upgrades and modifications. The engineer will collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering, operations, licensing, safety, and fire protection professionals to support safe, compliant, and successful project execution.

The ideal candidate will have experience within nuclear power, nuclear facilities, or another highly regulated environment, along with a strong understanding of fire protection engineering principles, regulatory requirements, and nuclear safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform and support fire hazard analyses, fire risk evaluations, fire area assessments, and fire protection engineering calculations.

  • Provide technical expertise for modifications involving fire detection and alarm systems, suppression systems, fire barriers, fire doors, fire dampers, fire pumps, water supplies, and passive fire protection features.

  • Evaluate fire hazards and their potential impact on safety-related, non-safety-related, and risk-significant systems, structures, and components.

  • Support deterministic and risk-informed fire protection analyses.

  • Interpret and apply applicable NRC requirements, NFPA codes and standards, and nuclear industry guidance.

  • Develop engineering calculations, evaluations, technical reports, specifications, procedures, and supporting documentation.

  • Support fire protection system design, modifications, testing, inspection, and maintenance activities.

  • Participate in engineering design reviews, configuration management activities, and facility modification projects.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering and project teams to identify and resolve complex technical issues.

  • Support regulatory, licensing, inspection, and audit activities as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.

  • Professional experience in fire protection engineering, nuclear power, nuclear facilities, industrial fire protection, or another highly regulated industry.

  • Knowledge of fire protection engineering principles, including fire detection and suppression systems, passive fire protection, fire barriers, and fire risk assessment.

  • Familiarity with applicable fire protection codes, regulatory requirements, and industry standards.

  • Strong engineering analysis, problem-solving, and technical writing skills.

  • Ability to interpret technical and regulatory requirements and apply sound engineering judgment.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary technical teams.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with one or more of the following are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • Nuclear power plant or other nuclear facility experience.

  • Experience with NRC fire protection requirements and nuclear licensing bases.

  • Familiarity with NFPA 805, Appendix R, or related nuclear fire protection requirements.

  • Experience with Fire PRA, probabilistic risk assessment, fire modeling, or risk-informed engineering.

  • Experience with fire protection system design, testing, inspection, or maintenance.

  • Experience supporting nuclear facility modifications or engineering change packages.

  • Experience supporting regulatory inspections, audits, or licensing activities.

  • Knowledge of nuclear safety, defense-in-depth, and safety-related design requirements.

What We're Looking For

The successful candidate will bring a strong nuclear safety mindset, technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate across engineering disciplines.

This opportunity is particularly well suited for an engineer who can independently evaluate complex fire protection issues, develop technically sound solutions, and effectively communicate engineering conclusions to both technical and project stakeholders.

Work Arrangement

This is a fully remote position. Minimal travel may be required for occasional site walkdowns or project support.

Additional details regarding travel and project location will be discussed with qualified candidates.
