Retail Stock and Inventory Associate

Part-time | Store-based | $18.50-$21.50 per hour

The store has received a shipment, but the customer cannot buy what nobody has located or stocked correctly. In this role, you help move merchandise from delivery to its proper place and keep the inventory record dependable for the rest of the team.

Receiving and replenishment

You will compare incoming goods with the delivery information, note missing or damaged items, and follow the store's receiving process. Products then go to their assigned locations or to the sales floor as directed. When a display needs replenishment, check that the item and label match before placing it out. During a count, report the difference between the record and what you can actually find.

The position involves movement between the stock area and the customer-facing part of the store. A shopper may ask where a product is located, and a salesperson may need you to confirm whether an item has arrived. Give an answer based on what you can verify. Questions requiring detailed product advice belong with the colleague trained to provide it.

Retail or warehouse experience is helpful, but an applicant new to inventory work can learn the employer's stock system and routine. What matters at the start is attention to detail, willingness to follow safety instructions, and steady work habits. Customer service experience may also help when you are on the sales floor.

A mismatch is not something to hide with a quick adjustment. The right response is to identify the item, note what differs, and follow the store's process for review. A correct record affects future orders and what staff tell customers. It also helps the next shift understand where the stock really is.

There may be repetitive tasks, such as checking labels or moving merchandise to assigned shelves. Those tasks deserve the same attention as a large delivery. The employer will explain the physical demands of its stock, the equipment used, and the hours of the store's shifts during hiring. You will be trained on the procedures that apply to your assigned work.

Working through a delivery

When cartons arrive, start with the store's receiving instructions and the documentation for that shipment. Items that are damaged or do not match should remain identifiable for review. After accepted merchandise has been recorded, move it to the assigned location so another associate can find it. The sequence matters: shelving an item before its status is clear can make the physical count harder to reconcile. If a delivery interrupts another task, leave enough information for a coworker to understand what has already been checked.

During replenishment, make sure a product goes to the correct display and that an empty space is not filled with a similar-looking item. A customer may rely on the sign in front of that product, and the checkout record relies on the correct item code. If you notice that a label or shelf location seems wrong, bring it to the supervisor rather than making an unauthorized change. Careful stock work supports both the sales team and the customer's confidence in what is available.
