The Registered New Applicant (RNA), under the direction and supervision of the registered nurse, is responsible for providing individualized nursing are based on the established standards of nursing practice. This requires assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and therapeutic communication accomplished through interventions based on clinical knowledge and skill. Recognizing a versatile patient population, the Registered Nurse Applicant will partner with the patient, the patient's family, and other healthcare team members to support the patient's optimal wellbeing.

The Registered Nurse Applicant will not take physician orders nor administer intravenous push medications.

The RNA position is a transitional position to the Registered Nurse Residency position; valid Registered Nurse licensure is a requirement for transition.

Duties and Responsibilities

These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned.



  • Demonstrates a theoretical knowledge base that facilitates the integration of clinical and inter-personal skills required for team cohesion, positive customer service, and quality patient care.



  • Completes comprehensive nursing assessments based on patient history, patient presentation, and appropriate standards of care and protocols.



  • Communicates with healthcare team (nurses, physicians, patients, etc.) in a timely and comprehensive manner.



  • Recognizes and facilitates patient and family engagement in plan of care. Provides patient education in a manner that meets the health literacy, socio-cultural, psychological, cognitive, functional, and spiritual needs of the patient and their family.



  • Accurately and efficiently documents patient care per hospital policy.



  • Accepts responsibility for professional development; participates and completes competencies, attends assigned learning sessions, self-reflects on nursing practice and communication opportunities, and requests educational assistance when needed.



  • Responds positively to change and demonstrates a willingness to learn new workflows and best practices.



  • Contributes to a safe environment for patients by initiating emergency measures as appropriate, responding to monitor/safety alarms, and reporting hazards.



  • Contributes to the prevention of infectious diseases among employees, patients, and visitors by adhering to Infection Control policies and procedures.



  • Supports compliance with hospital accreditation, state licensure, and other external accrediting agency requirements.



Reporting Relationship

Nurse Manager: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education



  • Graduation from an accredited Registered Nurse Program with documentation of application to take the RN state boards in the Commonwealth of Virginia or compact state.



Experience



  • Inpatient experience preferred.



Certifications/Licensure



  • Applicant must be eligible to take the state board censure exam for Registered Nurse and hold current BLS certification.
