About the Position
The Gastroenterology RN plans, coordinates, delivers, and evaluates nursing care for patients whose protective reflexes or self-care abilities are potentially compromised during operative or other invasive procedures. The RN specializes in illnesses and disorders related to the entire GI tract. The RN works collaboratively with other professionals to meet patient needs and is accountable for the patient outcomes resulting from the nursing care provided. The RN uses clinical knowledge, judgement, clinical-reasoning skills based on scientific principles, plans and implements nursing care to address the physical, psychological, and spiritual responses of the patient.
Adhere to the Admitting Policy and Discharge Policy standards of nursing care.
Provide comprehensive nursing care to meet the total needs of the patient during
the immediate Pre-Op, PACU, and Phase II period.
Assist the physician in procedure and managing endoscopy scopes.
Observe vital signs, IV site, dressings, tubes, drains, and any special monitoring
equipment required for the admit and recovery period.
Continually assess patient according to systematic approach and notify the
anesthesiologist or surgeon of any pertinent findings or changes.
Assess and implement discharge from each area of care i.e. Pre-Op, PACU,
Initiate, maintain, and perform discharge instructions for use of PCA’s (if ordered
for inpatients) and postoperative care at home.
Assess patient/ family ability to comprehend and adhere to discharge planning
and instructions.
Use available resources to enhance the teaching plan.
Responsible to stay self-informed of and support Policies and Procedures,
Standards of Care, and Standards of Practice.
Maintain work operations by following policies and procedures, Standards of
Care, and Standards of Practice.
Complete Workday Learning requirements as assigned.
Maintain annual competencies, licensure, and/or certifications and continuing
education.
Education Required:Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing
Experience Preferred: Minimum of three years’ experience in Surgical Services
Licensure:Registered Nurse licensed in the State of Indiana
Certifications: Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support
