Job Description - Senior Accountant

Position Summary


The Senior Accountant is responsible for managing core accounting functions within a manufacturing environment, including cost accounting, inventory valuation, general ledger management, and month-end/year-end close processes. This role requires strong analytical skills and a solid understanding of manufacturing cost structures to support accurate financial reporting and decision-making.


Key Responsibilities



  • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP

  • Manage standard costing, variance analysis (materials, labor, overhead), and inventory valuation

  • Reconcile general ledger accounts, including WIP, raw materials, and finished goods inventory

  • Month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries and account reconciliations

  • Analyze production costs and identify cost-saving opportunities in collaboration with operations

  • Support annual physical inventory counts and cycle counts; investigate and resolve discrepancies

  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cost center analysis

  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, company policies, and regulatory requirements

  • Support external audits and prepare audit schedules/documentation

  • Analyze fixed asset accounting, including capitalization, depreciation, and disposals

  • Prepare sales/use tax filings and support other tax compliance as needed

  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior accounting staff

  • Recommend and help implement process improvements and system enhancements (ERP)


Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required)

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2–3 years in a manufacturing environment

  • Strong knowledge of cost accounting principles and inventory management

  • Proficiency with ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Epicor, NetSuite, or similar) and advanced Excel skills

  • Solid understanding of GAAP and internal control frameworks

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work cross-functionally with operations, purchasing, and plant management


Preferred Skills



  • Experience with standard costing systems and variance analysis in a manufacturing/production setting

  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing or Six Sigma concepts

  • Experience supporting external/internal audits


Physical / Work Environment



  • Primarily office-based with occasional time on the plant/production floor

  • May require occasional travel to other facilities
