Description






JOB DESCRIPTION: 

  • Primary responsibilities include training and assessing veterinary technical staff and assessing and training research surgeons in basic techniques. 
  • This position also has a practical component, with duties such as administering anesthesia to large animal surgical models and possibly performing basic rodent technical procedures for researchers.
  • Additional duties include training researchers and DAR staff as needed to support the overall goals of the training team.  
Responsibilities include and are not limited to: 
  • Researcher training:
    • Assessing and training in aseptic technique, basic surgical competency and anesthetic management (eg. suturing, intubation)
  • Veterinary technical training:
    • Onboarding new technicians
    • Assessing skills and practices of existing technicians
    • Developing and coordinating continuing education for veterinary professionals
    • Managing training for visiting vet tech students
  • Other duties: 
    • Administering and monitoring of anesthesia of large animal surgical models, primarily swine
    • Conducting procedural technical assists for researchers (eg. Blood collection, injections), primarily rodents
    • Might directly or indirectly manage other training staff 

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

  • Well-qualified candidates will have experience in monitoring anesthesia, basic surgical techniques, and experience in formal or informal training.
  • This position will be working with potential biohazards related to animal exposure (airborne allergens, contact reactions) and may be exposed to animal diseases and/or research generated diseased animals.
  • The finalist selected for this position must meet the physical demands of job duties and will be required to stand, walk and sit; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands to handle or feel objects or controls; reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch and lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree and eight years of experience which includes laboratory animal and training experience or an equivalent combination of experience, education and training.
  • LATg certification required.
  • Degrees in teaching or biological sciences are preferred.

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location.  Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
