General Summary 


Under the direction and supervision of the Fire Marshal, the Senior Assistant Fire Marshal (SAFM) provides day-to-day supervision, technical leadership, and coordination of assigned Fire Marshal’s Office programs. The SAFM is responsible for oversight of the Fire Inspection Program or Plan Review Program, as assigned, and ensures consistent code interpretation and enforcement, timely service delivery, quality assurance, and effective coordination of work. The SAFM works closely with Planning, Building, Public Works, contracted municipal jurisdictions, design professionals, contractors, and other partner agencies. The SAFM may respond to emergency incidents at the request of the Incident Commander or Fire Marshal and may be designated to serve as Acting Fire Marshal. 





Essential Job Functions 



  • Supervises and coordinates the Fire Inspection Program or Plan Review Program, as assigned by the Fire Marshal. 



  • Provides day-to-day supervision, mentoring, training, technical direction, and work in coordination with Assistant Fire Marshals, Deputy Fire Marshals, Fire Inspectors, and other assigned personnel. 



  • Assigns, prioritizes, monitors, and evaluates inspections, plan reviews, permits, acceptance testing, construction inspections, and related Fire Marshal’s Office activities. 



  • Reviews complex or unusual code issues and provides technical guidance to ensure consistent interpretation and application of adopted fire and building codes, standards, laws, and ordinances. 



  • Coordinates program activities and resolves technical or operational issues with contracted jurisdictions, contractors, architects, engineers, design professionals, property owners, and outside agencies. 



  • Assists the Fire Marshal with policy and procedure development, quality assurance, workload management, program evaluation, performance measures, budgeting, reporting, and continuous improvement. 



  • Assists with employee performance evaluations and provides documented feedback regarding assigned personnel, consistent with Agency policy and applicable labor agreements. 



  • Performs complex fire and life-safety inspections, plan reviews, fire protection system acceptance testing, construction inspections, and code enforcement activities as operational needs require. 



  • Supports training of Fire Marshal’s Office and operations personnel in inspection techniques, code requirements, pre-incident planning, fire protection systems, and related programs. 



  • Maintains accurate records and ensures assigned program documentation, permit records, inspection records, and plan review records are complete and maintained in accordance with Agency requirements. 



  • Provides professional and timely customer service and assists in resolving escalated technical, compliance, or customer-service matters. 



  • Attends meetings, hearings, project conferences, and interagency coordination meetings as directed. 



  • May be designated as Acting Fire Marshal and performs other duties as assigned. 



                                                


Required Certifications 



  • ICC Fire Inspector I, or equivalent. 



  • ICC Fire Inspector II, or equivalent. 



  • ICC Fire Plans Examiner, or equivalent. 



  • Maintain EVIP certification to operate Agency-assigned vehicles. 



  • Maintain CPR and Basic First Aid certifications. 





Preferred Certifications 



  • ICC Fire Marshal. 



  • ICC Commercial Fire Alarm Inspector and/or Plans Examiner. 



  • ICC Commercial Fire Sprinkler Inspector and/or Plans Examiner. 



  • ICC Residential Fire Sprinkler Inspector/Plans Examiner. 



  • ICC Fire Investigator or equivalent.
