Senior Chemist

About the Role

The Senior Chemist is responsible for independently performing laboratory testing in accordance with defined standards and requirements. This role applies advanced analytical knowledge and technical expertise to conduct analytical testing, mentor other staff, coordinate routine and project-related work, and provide feedback to the laboratory manager. The Senior Chemist ensures data accuracy and completeness, leads system and document development, and contributes to process improvements within the laboratory.

Responsibilities

• Perform analytical testing on a variety of materials and samples in accordance with defined standards and test methods. 


• Prepare and manage standards, samples, reagents, and solutions required to support analytical testing, including the maintenance of associated inventory and documentation. Identify and implement improvements to associated documents. 


• Set up and verify proper operation of laboratory equipment and instruments. Perform calibration and maintenance as assigned. Identify and implement improvements to associated equipment and instrument documents. 


• Collect and document data and generate accurate results, ensuring alignment with data requirements and defined standards.  Identify atypical results and ensure timely escalation and investigation. 


• Review laboratory data to ensure alignment with defined standards, methods, or protocols. Assess data and provide guidance to peers to correct deficiencies and improve understanding. 


• Conduct non-routine testing and lead laboratory investigations, prepare and review assessments and investigation reports, and identify and implement corrective actions. 


• Lead and contribute to the development and revision of laboratory test methods, protocols, reports, and other technical documents. 


• Maintain general laboratory readiness, including the performance of routine housekeeping activities, managing logbooks, and maintaining inventory. 


• Mentor and provide guidance to less experienced staff to ensure adherence to standards and requirements. 


• Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Qualifications/Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or technical field with a minimum of five (5) years of experience in an analytical laboratory environment; or a postgraduate degree with a minimum of one (1) year of laboratory experience.


• Experience developing laboratory documents and systems. 


• Proven ability to follow and prepare written documents. 


• Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. 


• Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities. 


• Advanced working knowledge and experience with analytical laboratory instruments, techniques, and methods.


• Thorough understanding of documentation and requirements in a laboratory environment.
