Position Overview: The position supports the National Education Association’s strategic objective to focus the energy and resources of its 3+ million members toward the promotion of public education by assisting in the development of the Association’s communication strategy and positioning to support the mission and business objectives of NEA and its affiliates. The primary focus of this position will be on electoral and issue advocacy campaigns aligned with NEA’s strategic objective.
Position Summary: The Senior Communications Strategist serves as a communications and media advisor responsible for advancing the NEA’s mission, legislative priorities, electoral objectives, advocacy campaigns, and organizational goals through integrated strategic communications and earned media strategies. The primary responsibilities of this position include coordinating, leveraging, and planning comprehensive communications strategies and campaigns, including media relations and media plans, executive communications, public affairs, advocacy communications, crisis communications, and stakeholder outreach. The position develops and executes strategic communication initiatives that elevate NEA’s public profile, strengthen organizational positioning, influence public discourse, and drive engagement across internal and external audiences; crafts high-impact, message-centered media materials, including op-eds, press statements, media releases, executive remarks, and ready-to-place quotes that advance organizational priorities and shape public recourse; leads media engagement strategy for Association leadership and key surrogates by developing targeted pitches, coordinating high-visibility appearances, and directing preparation, briefing material, and research; cultivates and sustains relationships with top-tier national print, broadcast, digital, radio, podcast and streaming media outlets to expand influence and elevate organizational visibility; drives NEA presence at major events and identifies strategic opportunities for leadership engagement that amplify media narrative and reach priority audiences; oversees quality control and editorial integrity across media products through rigorous attention to detail and adherence to AP and organizational style standards.
This position is a DC-based position with NEA's headquarters building serving as the central workplace. Individuals hired for certain positions may request approval to telework in accordance with the policies and guidelines of the staff unit to which the position is assigned. MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Information Science, Marketing, or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills may be acquired. A Master’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in communications, journalism, political, or digital organizing is . Preference will be given to candidates with seven (7) years of professional experience. Direct experience leading political, legislative, and electoral communications efforts, including media strategy, message development, rapid response, and earned media campaigns. Track record of successfully managing crisis communications and reputational issues on a national scale. Extensive national media contacts and demonstrated success securing and managing high-level media engagement across national, political, education, issue-based broadcast, print, digital, and emerging media outlets. Demonstrated ability to craft compelling narratives and strategic media-facing messaging tailored to executive voice, tone, audience, and organizational priorities while maintaining message discipline. Experience in building effective communications campaigns. Proven mastery of communications and experience in the development of communication plans and evaluation techniques. Professional knowledge of and experience with multiple facets of new media (video/YouTube/blip.tv, audio, podcast, Flash), and social media (blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Groupsite). Podcast/streaming and high-level broadcast strategy. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Understanding of media organizations. Understanding of the basic fundamentals of advertising. Recent national media placements. Excellent oral and writing skills. Must be able to work extended hours on evenings and weekends. Samples of work products may be required at the time of the interview. Frequent travel required.
SELECTION CRITERIA: Tier 1 (Essential): Demonstrate extensive and directly related experience, advanced strategic communications expertise, and a proven record of success in national media, political, legislative, and advocacy communications environments. In-depth professional knowledge and demonstrated experience in strategic, organizational, political, legislative, or advocacy communications within a labor union, nonprofit, government entity, political organization, or communications/public relations agency. Preference given for candidates with 7 years of direct experience supporting electoral campaigns, legislative initiatives, issue advocacy efforts, or public affairs campaigns, including message development, rapid response, stakeholder engagement, and earned media strategy. Demonstrated expertise in earned media strategy, media relations, and media outreach, including cultivating strong relationships with national, state, and local reporters, editors, producers, and media influencers. Demonstrated understanding of media organizations, newsroom operations, and the evolving national media landscape. Proven success in securing national media placements within the last 12 months, including placements in print, digital, television, radio, and online media outlets. Sustained executive communications for principals. A track record of successfully managing crisis communications and reputational issues on a national scale. Podcast/streaming and high-level broadcast strategy. Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills, including demonstrated experience developing press releases, talking points, briefing documents, and other strategic communications materials under tight deadlines. Proven ability to provide cohesive and strategic communications counsel as part of high-profile campaigns. Tier 2 (Significant): Demonstrate strong communications experience and relevant media, advocacy, or public affairs experience. Demonstrate knowledge of the media landscape and shifting newsroom priorities. Clear understanding of how print and electronic communications can be coordinated to support media relations, marketing, advertising, development, and advocacy. Tier 3 (Desirable): Proven record of ongoing communications, professional development, and training. Knowledge of NEA’s vision, mission, and strategic goals. A Master’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.
