Description

The Senior Manager of Procurement Intermodal Truck is responsible for the support of all Procurement activities in the category of Intermodal Truck, Barge/Feeder, Depot and Chassis, while maintaining a high level of service to customers, measuring and monitoring vendor and staff performance and controlling overall operational costs. Upholds and ensures all Hapag-Lloyd policies and procedures.  As a Senior Manager, the incumbent in this position assists the Director of Procurement with strategic direction and contributes to the business wide strategy.   The incumbent is responsible for providing employees with guidance in handling and resolving difficult or complex problems by using specialized knowledge of a functional area and / or broad knowledge across functions.  The Senior Manager possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of a particular field of specialization in order to resolve complex issues or to build consensus. The incumbent will lead and supervise the work of other Managers and / or Coordinators, as well as manage complex accounts, claims or customers. 



Responsibilities

1.   Analysis, budgeting, costs

Category budget ownership, preparation and submission in coordination with Corporate Controlling

Financial analysis of costs, volumes, budgets, suppliers and individual cost elements

Utilizes data from company data warehouse and operative system for use in analytical reporting

Continuous monitoring and reporting of volume commitments, conditions, incentives, supplier performance/KPIs

Ensure HL is performing in line with their commitments to the supplier for regular and ad-hoc business reviews by management and to control risk and detect potential problems

 

2.    Procurement / pricing

Analyze tender bids and rate offers including detailed mathematical scenario calculations

Definition of cost and quality targets (KPIs and SLAs)

Design and preparation of tender bids, RFI, RFQs, and pricing events  

Prepare and execute negotiations and contracts for Region RNA  

Secure pricing on ad-hoc basis for spot or new business  

Supports the team with high level issues and inquiries  

Trouble shoot and resolve issues and handles elevated problems

 

3.    Process

Coach, train and develop staff in purchasing in negotiation strategy and tender preparation  

Ensure compliance and development of procurement processes

Lead projects and establish competence teams in area and regional level

Participate in the development and implementation of cost control procedures  

Participation in HL working groups, business processes reviews and any areas requested by Senior Management and Global Service Procurement.

 

4.    Compliance and Vessel Partner Coordination

Compliance with federal, state and worldwide laws and regulations.

Coordination with vessel partners with regards to joint contracting, and other operational items where legally allowed and operationally necessary

Participation in industry associations and company boards.

 

5.    Procurement Strategy

Develop alternative solutions and plans to solve problems  

Development of logistics concepts, alternatives and routings

Development of regional / mode procurement strategy for responsible categories in close coordination with Areas and Global Service Procurement (GSP)

Monitor supplier market and industry developments

Working closely with the Inland Desk to develop inland growth and optimize opportunities

 

6. Supplier Interaction

Participate in Supplier discussions outside the context of negotiations including but not limited to performance.

Work directly with all Suppliers on service failure escalations, or those showing poor trends through SLA Monitoring, Blume Statistics or major disruptions which are not resolved by QSC 



Qualifications
  • University degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience in the Maritime Industry or the equivalent combination of education and experience 

  • At least 3 years of leadership experience

  • Understands most shipping terms; can use a dictionary to find terms not recognized. Is willing to clarify shipping terms unique to a location. Understands routings, schedules and general practices of various countries, carriers, ports and terminals.  

  • Good understanding of the shipment processes 

  • Knowledge in terminal/ port operations essential. Awareness of regional factors for ship and port calls. (Tidal conditions, encounter regulations, wind and weather dependencies, currents, port restrictions from authorities, max. draught in the port and on the river). 

  • Ability to follow up on projects in a structural way. 

  • Effective communication, co-ordination and conflict management skills 

  • Ability to link and co- ordinate business-related developments through the organization 

  • Good analytical skills 

  • Advanced PC knowledge (QlikView, Excel) 

  • This position is in the United States and requires eligibility to work in the United States and completion of the employment eligibility form required under federal law
