Service Technician (Heavy Equipment Technician)

Position Summary

The Service Technician is responsible for system and component installations, repairs, troubleshooting, maintenance, and retrofits to customers' equipment or machinery. In this position, you will serve customers directly on location or in the shop and work closely with our Internal Service Dispatchers and Coordinators to provide a positive customer experience. The position requires the ability to learn and retain product-specific information and apply that knowledge to a variety of equipment and service situations.

Experience with refuse equipment is not required. Candidates with strong mechanical repair skills, the ability to read hydraulic and electrical schematics, and a willingness to learn are encouraged to apply. SWS provides on-the-job training, paid manufacturer training, and formal professional training courses, with opportunities to work alongside experienced lead technicians. Many of our technicians learn the specifics of refuse equipment after joining SWS.

As SWS is a refuse equipment company, this position will work on a variety of equipment, including stationary equipment such as balers and compactors and mobile equipment such as refuse trucks, septic trucks, street sweepers, and other related machinery.

The Service Technician position includes four technician levels with published criteria for advancement, company-paid certifications and manufacturer training, and opportunities to pursue a career path into service management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Ensure health and safety is the top priority by adhering to all policies, processes, and safety protocols
• Read and follow engineering, hydraulic, and electrical schematic drawings and technical specifications
• Prepare new equipment for delivery to customers
• Provide customer guidance for improvement and proper equipment operation
• Assemble, test, and service systems and components
• Travel to customer job sites as needed, up to 25% travel associated with this position
• Manage workflow to ensure the company meets customer-required dates
• Follow the process of paperwork requirements for billing, reports, and other documentation
• Work in environmental conditions that may include periods of extreme heat and cold
• Participate in required on-the-job, manufacturer, and professional training
• Execute other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

• Journeyman-level experience is highly preferred
• Strong mechanical repair expertise with the ability to work independently
• Ability to read and interpret hydraulic and electrical schematics
• Proficiency with technology and technical systems
• Demonstrates a proactive approach to problem-solving and assigned tasks
• Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities while maintaining an organized and efficient workflow to ensure timely task completion
• Ability and willingness to learn and retain product-specific information
• Refuse equipment experience is preferred but not required

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation ranges from $27.50 to $53.00 per hour based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and technician level. The position includes opportunities for overtime and applicable on-call premiums. The regular schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with overtime available. Company service trucks and fuel cards are provided. Travel time is paid, and per diem is provided for overnight trips.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Please note there will be up to 25% travel associated with this position.
