The Shift Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily operations during assigned shifts, ensuring staff productivity, quality service, safety, and adherence to company policies. This role acts as a key link between frontline employees and management, providing leadership, coaching, and operational support to meet business goals. The Shift Supervisor serves as the on‑site decision maker during their shift and plays a critical role in incident response, permit control, and operational continuity.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
Prepares daily shift reports, production reports, and unit performance reports in a timely manner.
Prepares incident reports and permitting documents in a timely manner.
Manages the day-to-day operation of different units and their crew members.
Ensures compliance with company policies, health and safety regulations, and quality standards.
Collaborates with other departments, such as maintenance, to determine work order flow and ensures smooth operation.
Approves operators’ work requests and troubleshoots issues with operators.
Manages day-to-day inventory based on production targets and goals.
Identifies and resolves production issues, and implements continuous improvement initiatives.
Reviews operators’ daily records to ensure units are operating within the guidelines of the permits.
Enforce all safety policies, procedures, and operating standards
Serve as permit authority for hot work, confined space entry, and lockout/tagout
Lead shift‑level safety meetings and toolbox talks
Respond to spills, upsets, and emergencies; initiate incident reporting and secure the area as required
Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DTSC, CUPA, and local regulatory requirements
Directly supervise and assign work to operators and shift personnel
Provide real‑time coaching, guidance, and corrective feedback
Maintain clear shift handoffs and documentation to ensure continuity
Other Functions:
Trains and mentors team members to improve performance and job satisfaction.
Complies with safe work practices, policies, and processes at all times.
Fosters a positive and productive work environment.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Participate in investigations, audits, and corrective action follow‑up.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This role supervises the following positions: All onsite crew members.
Required Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.).
5+ years of experience in Manufacturing, Refinery or related field.
Prior experience in a lead operator or supervisory role
Working knowledge of refinery equipment, processes, and safety systems
Years of Experience: 5+
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
Knowledge of principles and facts related to the production, processing, storage, and distribution of manufacture goods.
Strong safety leadership and decision‑making under pressure
Ability to supervise and hold teams accountable
Clear written and verbal communication skills
Problem‑solving and troubleshooting ability
Ability to balance production demands with safety and compliance
Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
The skill in obtaining and seeing the appropriate use of equipment, facilities, and materials needed to do certain work.
The skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
The skill in analyzing needs and product requirements to create a solution.
The abilities that influence the acquisition and application of knowledge in problem solving.
The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
The ability to communicate information and ideas in writing and speaking.
