Job Description - Shipping and Receiving Clerk

Shipping and Receiving Clerk

The goods and the records must match

A delivery has arrived with one item missing. An outbound order is ready, but its address needs checking. The Shipping and Receiving Clerk handles these details before they turn into incorrect stock counts or avoidable customer problems. This is a full-time warehouse position paying $21.50-$25.50 per hour.

Receiving

  • Check goods against the expected order or delivery document.
  • Record quantities and identify an obvious discrepancy or damage.
  • Keep affected goods identified while a supervisor reviews an issue.
  • Update the receiving status through the employer's process.
  • Place accepted items in their assigned location.

The goal is a reliable record of what actually arrived, not simply what a document said should arrive. If information is missing, ask before making an adjustment that could hide the difference. Office and warehouse colleagues use your entries to answer availability questions and plan the next movement of stock.

The clerk may also take part in routine stock checks. When a count differs from the system, verify the location and item identifier, then record the difference for review rather than forcing the numbers to agree. A product waiting for inspection should not be treated as available inventory, and an order staged for collection should remain traceable. These distinctions may look minor from a desk, but they determine what the warehouse can actually promise to a customer. The employee finishing the next shift should be able to understand the item's status from your notes.

Shipping

  • Confirm the item and quantity against the order.
  • Check address and accompanying documentation.
  • Prepare approved labels and stage the order in the right area.
  • Record when an order is ready or has left the facility.
  • Report an order that cannot go out as planned.
  • Keep the work area organized for the next shift.

You may speak with drivers, stock colleagues, and office staff through the day. A useful message says what item or order is involved, what differs, and what decision is needed. Do not quietly substitute a product or change an order you do not own. The right person can act quickly when the facts are clearly presented.

You will learn where the warehouse keeps goods waiting for inspection, goods accepted into stock, and orders staged for collection. Keeping those areas distinct is as important as entering the right number in a system. If a carrier arrives while an order is still being checked, give an accurate status to the appropriate colleague instead of rushing the shipment. At shift change, record what has been verified and which discrepancy awaits a decision. These habits protect both the inventory record and the people relying on it.

At the end of a shipment, the goods should be in their assigned place, the paperwork should reflect the actual movement, and an unresolved difference should have an owner. That is a useful definition of finished work in this role.

Clear status prevents an unnecessary recount.

Who should consider the role

Someone who likes working with both physical goods and precise information. Experience in a warehouse, inventory position, or office administration is helpful but not essential for a clerk opening. The employer will teach its labeling, scanning, and record process. You should be able to read item identifiers, check quantities, and follow site safety instructions. Any equipment certification required for a particular assignment will be identified during hiring.

The workplace may be busy, but speed does not replace verification. A wrong count can affect purchasing; an incorrect outbound label can send a correct item to the wrong recipient. A careful check at the right moment is part of productive work. You will be expected to communicate a delay or discrepancy early so the next person can address it.

Application

Send a resume with any shipping, warehouse, inventory, or recordkeeping experience. If you are new to a warehouse, show work that required attention to quantities or instructions. We will review applicants for both the physical workflow and the accuracy this role requires. If you’re selected for the next step, you may be asked to complete an application on the hiring company’s website. A specific inventory software background is not necessary. The team will explain its site procedures to candidates moving forward.
