Shop Mechanic

OVERVIEW

Under the direction of the Project Manager, the Shop Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and performing routine maintenance and safety inspections on company vehicles and heavy equipment, including trucks, trailers, and construction equipment. This position works primarily out of the shop, with occasional travel to company properties and job sites throughout the Central Valley (Sacramento to Bakersfield) for on-site repairs; occasional overnight stays may be required. Work is performed regularly outdoors and in all weather conditions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Diagnose, adjust, and repair heavy equipment, trucks, and vehicles from manufacturers including John Deere, CAT, Komatsu, Ford, and Chevrolet.
• Test drive trucks and equipment to diagnose malfunctions and confirm proper operation after repairs.
• Repair or replace malfunctioning mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic components and parts.
• Perform routine maintenance, including oil changes, battery checks, and lubrication of equipment and machinery.
• Perform safety inspections on all types of vehicles and equipment, including required periodic inspections on freightliners and Peterbilts.
• Perform welding and air conditioning (A/C) system repairs as needed.
• Maintain a clean, organized shop area and ensure tools and equipment are kept in good working order.
• Comply with all company policies and procedures and applicable safety and government regulations.
• Work overtime as needed based on business requirements.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor or management.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or equivalent (HS/GED).
• A/C certification through MACS 609 or ASE required.
• In-depth understanding of mechanical equipment, heavy equipment diagnostics and repair, diesel engine repair, hydraulic systems, and routine vehicle maintenance and safety inspections.
• One (1) year of mechanic experience.
• Ability to safely operate vehicles, equipment, tools, and shop equipment to diagnose and complete repairs.
• Ability to read and understand service and technical information.
• Ability to independently handle multiple work projects and work in all weather conditions.
• Valid Driver's License (Class C)

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

• Three (3) years of mechanic experience in fleet maintenance, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• ASE certification and Brake certification through the State of California (or ASE equivalent), desired.
• Experience working with team members on shared shop responsibilities, such as hand-tool inventory to support assigned repairs.
• Class A Commercial Driver's License.

• Strong communication skills.
• Good organizational, scheduling, and time-management skills.
• Ability to assess, evaluate, repair, and maintain vehicles and equipment.
• Experience evaluating, maintaining, and troubleshooting truck and diesel motor systems, including transmissions, suspension, steering, and brakes.
• Adaptable, accountable, trustworthy, and committed team player.

• Sit and/or stand for extended periods.
• Move about the shop floor regularly, including around machinery, power tools, impact tools, and moving vehicles.
• Frequent bending and lifting; carry and handle tools, parts, and equipment components.
• Occasional travel to off-site properties within the organization.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a shop and outdoor environment, with temperatures varying seasonally. Equipment used includes hand tools, power and impact tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop machinery. This position involves occasional travel to company properties and job sites throughout the Central Valley.

COMPENSATION AND CLASSIFICATION

This is a full-time, non-exempt, hourly position with a pay range of $30.00–$35.00 per hour, eligible for overtime in accordance with California law. Meal and rest periods are provided in accordance with California law. This position has purchasing authority as assigned and no supervisory responsibility. Benefit eligibility is determined by hours worked and company policy.
