Description of Work

This position supervises Interpreters of the Deaf, the Foreign Language Specialist as well as the contract interpreting staff. Work involves coordinating interpreter services on and off campus and be responsible for interpreting contract services. Provide direct interpreting services in more difficult situations as needed. Monitor the quality of interpreter services and work with agencies to set up procedures for utilizing interpreters. Adhere to the Code of Ethics of the National Registry For The Interpreters for the Council for the Hearing Impaired. Coordinate and provide sign language training as needed.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

*60%    Interpret for school meetings which include school personnel, students, parents, and/or other external participants to ensure access to information.  Meetings may include but are not limited to IEP meetings, student staffing, Mental Health meetings, staff development meetings on and off campus with DPI and other outside persons/agencies, phone conversations, etc.  Provide services to Deaf Administrators, and Dept. Heads as needed on a daily basis. *15%    Interpret in the classroom for mainstreamed students. *15%   Coordinating and scheduling the interpreters for various assignments.  If needed, contact the free-lance interpreting services to cover the interpreting needs that the school interpreting services could not meet due to conflict of scheduling or prior commitment to interpreters’ basic assignments. *10% Serve as a resource to the Staff Development Specialist and 2 Sign Language Interpreters by supervising and evaluating, or any combination thereof the teaching responsibilities of the Staff Development Specialist to employees who do not have knowledge of sign language. 

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in an interpreter training program from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of professional interpreting experience in a community, business, or government program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualification If applicable as defined by GS 90D, meets the requirements for licensure as determined by the North Carolina Interpreter and Transliterator Licensing Board.
