Founded by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2002, After-School All-Stars, Los Angeles (ASAS-LA) is a leading after-school program provider whose programs educate, enlighten and inspire thousands of K-12 students each day. Activities are centered around health, fitness and nutrition; the visual and performing arts; and youth leadership and community service learning.

In partnership with the City of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Unified School District, Montebello School District, and charter school organizations, ASAS-LA brings innovative, cutting-edge enrichment programs that contribute to reducing drug use, crime and violence; while increasing the safety of students in the after school hours.

ASAS-LA is part of the national After-School All-Stars, which provides after school programs in 12 cities, serving over 81,000 students.

 

Job Description

BASIC ASSIGNMENT:

The Site Mentor will be responsible for both the operational compliance and program quality of 3 ASAS-LA sites. These sites will be part of a larger region of programs. The Site Mentor will report directly to his/her Program Director ensuring the implementation of mission-based programming that educates, enlightens and inspires students in grades K-12.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS:

  • To promote program quality and staff excellence in assigned schools within the organization through everyday coaching, mentoring and periodic assessments.
  • Responsible for facilitating the development and maintenance of program goals and objectives of their assigned schools through a series of consistent personnel meetings, chapter meetings, monthly site observations and periodic reviews of program sessions and semesters.
  • Establish organizational awareness at their respective sites, informing and educating field staff on opportunities, challenges and events affecting ASAS-LA as a whole.
  • Maintain positive and open communication with school administration and faculty.
  • Manage individual site budgets, maintain revenue through high student attendance (ADA), identify in-kind opportunities to control costs, manage and track program inventory, as well as review and approve payroll and other HR documentation.
  • Work directly with Program Specialists in maintaining student participation (dosage) and attendance (ADA) throughout the year via recruitment and retention activities, including student "voice and choice" strategies.
  • Promote staff excellence through professional development opportunities, periodic assessments and renewed leadership strategies.
  • Ensure operating compliance and approved business practices with state, city and local school district policies and procedures regarding human resources, discipline procedures, safety protocols, program audits and reporting procedures.
  • Accountable for entry, tracking, and reporting of attendance, grades and demographic data.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends if necessary.
  • Willing to travel to off-site meetings, trainings and events.
  • To perform other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MUST have at least 1 year of experience working in a leadership and supervisory capacity in an after-school, day camp or community youth outreach setting.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with School District staff, public officials, private sector officials, parents and community leaders.
  • Familiarity with quality criteria for after school programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and demonstrate sensitivity to others as well as respond to critical incidents and act swiftly in an emergency situation.
  • Excellent organizational and managerial skills.
  • Familiarity with basic computer software programs.
  • CPR and First Aid Certifications.
  • Must clear DOJ and FBI Livescan, DMV H6 and Tuberculosis Clearance.
  • At Least 21 years of age.
  • Fluency in a language other than English highly desirable.
  • Baccalaureate degree in education, social or human services, child development, recreation or related field is desirable but not required.
