Special Education Academic Tutor - Middle School Student

About the Role: As an Tutor at Tutor Me Education, you’ll provide personalized, one-on-one tutoring to students with special needs in their homes. You will be responsible for helping students with daily activities, offering moral support, and delivering tailored instruction based on their Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

We are currently hiring for multiple positions across all cities in Palo Alto, CA

Details:

• In-Person Tutoring in Palo Alto, CA
• Schedule: 25 hours a month; 3 sessions a week for 1.5-2 hours
• Pay rate ranges from $25-$35 per hour

Ideal Candidate:

• Teaching credential required
• Experience working with students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including rare genetic syndromes and complex learning profiles
• Strong background in special education and individualized academic intervention
• Skilled in teaching foundational literacy, reading comprehension, written expression, and functional academic skills
• Experience supporting students performing significantly below grade level in reading and math
• Able to teach math concepts and math word problems using hands-on, concrete instructional strategies
• Patient, encouraging, and skilled at building confidence in struggling learners
• Comfortable adapting instruction through visual supports, manipulatives, guided practice, and repetition
• Strong lesson-planning and progress-monitoring abilities
• Able to connect instruction to student interests to increase motivation and engagement
• Experience supporting language and communication development is highly preferred

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide individualized instruction in foundational literacy, reading fluency, and reading comprehension
• Teach strategies to improve comprehension, vocabulary development, and understanding of written text
• Support writing skills, including sentence construction, language conventions, organization, and written expression
• Develop functional academic skills that promote independence and real-world application of learning
• Provide instruction in foundational math concepts and math word problem-solving
• Use tactile, hands-on teaching methods and visual supports to reinforce learning and retention
• Break down academic concepts into manageable steps and provide repeated guided practice
• Support language and communication development through interactive discussions and structured activities
• Incorporate the student's interests in sports, statistics, and athletics into lessons to increase engagement and motivation
• Monitor progress, adjust instructional strategies, and communicate regularly regarding student growth and needs
• Foster a supportive, encouraging learning environment that builds confidence and academic independence
