Specialty (Cheese, Beer & Wine) Clerk PT

Purpose of the Role

The Specialty Clerk creates an inviting and engaging experience for customers by providing knowledgeable service and maintaining well-stocked, attractive displays of cheese, beer, wine, and other specialty items. This role supports Weaver Street Market’s mission by ensuring product quality, food safety, and department cleanliness while fostering community through friendly, responsive customer service.

A. Primary Duties of the Role

• Provide excellent customer service by answering questions, recommending products, and processing special orders for cheese, meat, and other specialty items.
• Cut, wrap, and package cheese, olives, and similar products for retail sale. Slice meat and cheese to order following food safety and sanitation procedures.
• Stock and maintain all specialty areas, including cheese cases, beer coolers, and wine shelves. Ensure displays are clean, organized, and appealing.
• Receive deliveries and stock promptly. Keep back stock organized and sales floor areas clear and tidy.
• Follow opening and closing procedures, including setup, cleaning, and completion of shift tasks.
• Monitor product rotation, pull expired items, and maintain accurate signage and pricing.
• Use Microsoft Teams to check department messages, store/unit updates, and co-op-wide news. Post and respond as needed to support clear and respectful communication among all employees.
• Assist other departments and cover co-worker breaks as needed.
• Address routine concerns; escalate non-routine issues to the department manager or manager on duty.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support the department and Weaver Street Market as a whole.

• Safety and Sanitation: Follow all food safety and sanitation procedures. Maintain a clean and safe work environment, especially when using slicers, knives, or other tools.

C. Required Qualifications and Certifications

• A working knowledge of English is required for this customer-facing role
• 18+ years of age
• Ability to use basic food service equipment safely and effectively (e.g., knives, slicers)

D. Preferred Experience and Knowledge

• Customer service experience
• Experience working with cheese, wine, or specialty foods
• Prior work withing a co-op or community grocery store
• High school diploma or equivalent work experience
• Familiarity with Microsoft Teams and/or Paycom applications

E. Physical Requirements

• Standing and walking for long periods
• Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds (e.g., boxes of product, wheels of cheese)
• Pushing and pulling carts or loaded dollies
• Bending and twisting to stock shelves and access coolers
• Use of hands and fine motor skills for slicing, wrapping, labeling, and packaging
• Use of stairs (Southern Village and Raleigh Stores)
• Work in refrigerated environments (cheese case, walk-in coolers)
• Work in outdoor areas (unloading or receiving deliveries)
