Job Description - Speech-Language Pathologist (Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation)

The Department of Physical Medicine is seeking an energetic and inquisitive research-focused speech-language pathologist. This position would provide opportunity to conduct clinical research on treatment in stroke and neurodegenerative ataxias, with a collaborative and collegial team of investigators and clinicians. One study is evaluating the neural and behavioral effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) augmentation of language treatment for aphasia. The other study will focus on tDCS and dysarthria treatment in neurodegenerative ataxias. Training is available in structural and functional neuroimaging analysis, tDCS, and other methods of investigation.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participant recruitment and testing including research assessments and standardized language tests.
  • Administer standardized cognitive, language and speech assessments to research subjects via lab, clinic or home visit.
  • Treatment of aphasia and dysarthria based on treatment protocols.
  • Score speech and language assessments.
  • Call patients with reminders of their appointments.
  • Assist in preparation of data reports for IRB, funding agencies, and other research sponsors.
  • Maintain logs of patient screening, and data collection.
  • Maintain filing system for electronic and paper-based records.
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA and IRB regulations and guidelines.
  • Actively communicate and update supervising coordinators and/or faculty on patient data collection and entry status via verbal and written communication.
  • Have initiative in anticipating and responding to staff and research subjects’ needs based on awareness of routine and repeated job functions.
  • Preparation and presentation of abstracts at national meetings with appropriate mentorship, co-authorship of manuscripts, application of a reference manager, and production of tables and figures for publication.
  • Data entry, management and calculations using computerized database, word processing and spreadsheet software; review data input for accuracy and completeness.
  • Set up and take down equipment for patient testing.
  • Follow all written and unwritten study practices, procedures and protocols.
  • Organize and file participant records; prepare and maintain study materials.


Minimum Qualifications
  • A master's Degree or the equivalent graduate degree from an accredited speech-language pathology program and be licensed as a Speech-Language Pathologist in the State of Maryland.
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP).
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Related experience in testing and treating adult patients with neurogenic communication disorders.
